Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 20th August 1909 Anne Cavendish Countess Sandwich was born to [her father] Victor Christian William Cavendish 9th Duke Devonshire [aged 41] and [her mother] Evelyn Emily Mary Petty-Fitzmaurice Duchess Devonshire [aged 38].
In 1917 [her brother] Edward William Spencer Cavendish 10th Duke Devonshire [aged 21] and [her sister-in-law] Mary Alice Gascoyne-Cecil Duchess Devonshire [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of James Gascoyne-Cecil 4th Marquess Salisbury [aged 55] and Cicely Anne Gore Marchioness Salisbury [aged 49]. He the son of [her father] Victor Christian William Cavendish 9th Duke Devonshire [aged 48] and [her mother] Evelyn Emily Mary Petty-Fitzmaurice Duchess Devonshire [aged 46].
On 28th November 1928 Henry Philip Hunloke [aged 21] and Anne Cavendish Countess Sandwich [aged 19] were married at St George's Church, Hanover Square. She the daughter of Victor Christian William Cavendish 9th Duke Devonshire [aged 60] and Evelyn Emily Mary Petty-Fitzmaurice Duchess Devonshire [aged 58].
On 10th December 1930 [her daughter] Phillipa Victoria Hunloke Viscountess Astor was born to [her husband] Henry Philip Hunloke [aged 23] and Anne Cavendish Countess Sandwich [aged 21]. She married (1) 26th April 1955 William Waldorf Astor 3rd Viscount Astor, son of Waldorf Astor 2nd Viscount Astor and Nancy Witcher Langhorne Viscountess Astor.
On 27th July 1934 [her future husband] Victor Montagu 10th Earl Sandwich [aged 28] and Maud Rosemary Peto [aged 18] were married. He the son of [her future father-in-law] George Charles Montagu 9th Earl Sandwich [aged 59] and Alberta Sturges Countess Sandwich [aged 56].
On 6th May 1938 [her father] Victor Christian William Cavendish 9th Duke Devonshire [aged 69] died at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire [Map]. He was buried at Cavendish Plot, St Peter's Church, Edensor [Map]. His son [her brother] Edward [aged 43] succeeded 10th Duke Devonshire, 13th Earl Devonshire, 5th Earl Burlington, 13th Baron Cavendish Hardwick. [her sister-in-law] Mary Alice Gascoyne-Cecil Duchess Devonshire [aged 42] by marriage Duchess Devonshire. On 2nd April 1960 [her mother] Evelyn Emily Mary Petty-Fitzmaurice Duchess Devonshire [aged 67] died. Both the Duke and Duchess were buried in the Cavendish Plot, St Peter's Church, Edensor [Map].
Evelyn Emily Mary Petty-Fitzmaurice Duchess Devonshire: On 27th August 1870 she was born to Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice 5th Marquess Lansdowne. On 30th July 1892 Victor Christian William Cavendish 9th Duke Devonshire and she were married. She by marriage Duchess Devonshire. She the daughter of Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice 5th Marquess Lansdowne. They were fifth cousins.

His son [her nephew] Andrew [aged 30] succeeded 11th Duke Devonshire, 14th Earl Devonshire, 6th Earl Burlington, 14th Baron Cavendish Hardwick. Deborah Vivien Mitford Duchess Devonshire [aged 30] by marriage Duchess Devonshire. On 24th December 1988 [her sister-in-law] Mary Alice Gascoyne-Cecil Duchess Devonshire [aged 55] died. Both the Duke and Duchess were buried in the Cavendish Plot, St Peter's Church, Edensor [Map].
On 26th April 1955 [her son-in-law] William Waldorf Astor 3rd Viscount Astor [aged 47] and Phillipa Victoria Hunloke Viscountess Astor [aged 24] were married. She by marriage Viscountess Astor. The difference in their ages was 23 years. She the daughter of Henry Philip Hunloke [aged 48] and Anne Cavendish Countess Sandwich [aged 45].
The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

In 1965 Victor Montagu 10th Earl Sandwich [aged 58] and Anne Cavendish Countess Sandwich [aged 55] were divorced.
On 1st July 1968 [her former step-son] John Montagu 11th Earl of Sandwich [aged 25] and Caroline Montagu Countess of Sandwich [aged 25] were married. He the son of [her former husband] Victor Montagu 10th Earl Sandwich [aged 62].
On 13th January 1978 [her husband] Henry Philip Hunloke [aged 71] died.
On 18th May 1981 Anne Cavendish Countess Sandwich [aged 71] died.
On 25th February 1995 [her former husband] Victor Montagu 10th Earl Sandwich [aged 88] died. His son [her former step-son] John [aged 51] succeeded 11th Earl Sandwich. Caroline Montagu Countess of Sandwich [aged 52] by marriage Countess Sandwich.
