On 8th April 1649 Charles Berkeley 2nd Earl Berkeley was born to [his father] George Berkeley 1st Earl Berkeley [aged 21] and [his mother] Elizabeth Massingberd Couness Berkeley.

John Evelyn's Diary. 12th April 1656. Mr. Berkeley [aged 7] and Mr. Robert Boyle [aged 29] (that excellent person and great virtuoso), Dr. Taylor [aged 43], and Dr. Wilkins [aged 42], dined with me at Sayes Court [Map], when I presented Dr. Wilkins with my rare burning-glass. In the afternoon, we all went to Colonel Blount's [aged 52], to see his newly-invented plows.

Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes

Récits d’un bourgeois de Valenciennes aka The Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes is a vivid 14th-century vernacular chronicle written by an anonymous urban chronicler from Valenciennes in the County of Hainaut. It survives in a manuscript that describes local and regional history from about 1253 to 1366, blending chronology, narrative episodes, and eyewitness-style accounts of political, military, and social events in medieval France, Flanders, and the Low Countries. The work begins with a chronological framework of events affecting Valenciennes and its region under rulers such as King Philip VI of France and the shifting allegiances of local nobility. It includes accounts of conflicts, sieges, diplomatic manoeuvres, and the impact of broader struggles like the Hundred Years’ War on urban life in Hainaut. After 17th June 1679 [his son] James Berkeley 3rd Earl Berkeley was born to Charles Berkeley 2nd Earl Berkeley [aged 30] and [his wife] Elizabeth Noel Countess Berkeley [aged 25]. He married 13th February 1711 his sixth cousin Louisa Lennox Countess Berkeley, daughter of Charles Lennox 1st Duke Richmond and Anne Brudenell Duchess Richmond, and had issue.

On 11th September 1679 [his father] George Berkeley 1st Earl Berkeley [aged 51] was created 1st Earl Berkeley, 1st Viscount Dursley. [his mother] Elizabeth Massingberd Couness Berkeley by marriage Countess Berkeley.

On 29th September 1679 John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland [aged 75] died at Nether Haddon, Derbyshire [Map]. He was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Bottesford, Leicestershire [Map]. His son John [aged 41] succeeded 9th Earl of Rutland. [his sister-in-law] Catherine Noel Duchess Rutland [aged 22] by marriage Countess of Rutland.

After 1680 [his son] George Berkeley was born to Charles Berkeley 2nd Earl Berkeley [aged 30] and [his wife] Elizabeth Noel Countess Berkeley [aged 26]. He married 1735 Henrietta Hobart Countess Suffolk, daughter of Henry Hobart 4th Baronet and Elizabeth Maynard Lady Hobart.

On 29th October 1682 [his father-in-law] Baptist Noel 3rd Viscount Campden [aged 71] died. His son [his brother-in-law] Edward [aged 41] succeeded 4th Viscount Campden, 4th Baron Hicks of Ilmington in Warwickshire. Elizabeth Wriothesley Countess Gainsborough [aged 36] by marriage Viscountess Campden. He was buried at Church of St Peter and St Paul, Exton, Rutlandshire [Map].

A huge monument in black and white marble, with a tall base on which stand obelisks, on balls capped by two black urns and a large open pediment. Within, are the Viscount and his fourth wife Elizabeth Bertie Viscountess Campden [aged 42] in effigy and various low reliefs, depicting his previous wives and nineteen children, in Roman dress, completed by Grinling Gibbons [aged 34].

Elizabeth Bertie Viscountess Campden: In 1640 she was born to Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey and Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness. On 6th July 1655 Baptist Noel 3rd Viscount Campden and she were married. She by marriage Viscountess Campden. The difference in their ages was 29 years. She the daughter of Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey and Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness. They were second cousin twice removed. In 1683 Elizabeth Bertie Viscountess Campden died.

On 1st December 1682 [his brother-in-law] Edward Noel 1st Earl Gainsborough [aged 41] was created 1st Earl Gainsborough. Elizabeth Wriothesley Countess Gainsborough [aged 36] by marriage Countess Gainsborough.

On 26th April 1683 [his brother-in-law] Edward Noel 1st Earl Gainsborough [aged 42] and Mary Herbert Countess Gainsborough were married. She by marriage Countess Gainsborough. They were fourth cousins.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 15th September 1706 [his son-in-law] John Germain 1st Baronet [aged 56] and Elizabeth Berkeley Lady Germain were married. She brought £6000 to the marriage. She the daughter of Charles Berkeley 2nd Earl Berkeley [aged 57] and Elizabeth Noel Countess Berkeley [aged 52].

Before 10th December 1708 [his mother] Elizabeth Massingberd Couness Berkeley died. She was buried in St Dunstan Church, Cranford.

On 24th September 1710 Charles Berkeley 2nd Earl Berkeley [aged 61] died. His son James [aged 31] succeeded 3rd Earl Berkeley, 3rd Viscount Dursley, 11th Baron Berkeley.

On 30th July 1719 [his former wife] Elizabeth Noel Countess Berkeley [aged 65] died.

The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.
