On 7th May 1657 [his father] John Mordaunt 1st Viscount Mordaunt (age 30) and [his mother] Elizabeth Carey Viscountess Mordaunt (age 25) were married. He the son of [his grandfather] John Mordaunt 1st Earl Peterborough and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Howard Countess Peterborough (age 54). They were second cousin once removed.

In 1658 Charles Mordaunt 3rd Earl Peterborough 1st Earl Monmouth was born to [his father] John Mordaunt 1st Viscount Mordaunt (age 31) and [his mother] Elizabeth Carey Viscountess Mordaunt (age 26).

On 10th July 1659 [his father] John Mordaunt 1st Viscount Mordaunt (age 33) was created 1st Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon, 1st Baron Mordaunt of Reigate. [his mother] Elizabeth Carey Viscountess Mordaunt (age 27) by marriage Viscountess Mordaunt of Avalon.

On 11th April 1674 Charles Mordaunt 3rd Earl Peterborough 1st Earl Monmouth (age 16) began his education at Christ Church College, Oxford University.

On 5th June 1675 [his father] John Mordaunt 1st Viscount Mordaunt (age 48) died. He was buried at All Saints Church, Fulham. His son Charles (age 17) succeeded 2nd Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon, 2nd Baron Mordaunt of Reigate.

In 1678 Charles Mordaunt 3rd Earl Peterborough 1st Earl Monmouth (age 20) and Carey Fraser Countess Peterborough and Monmouth (age 18) were married.

On 5th April 1679 [his mother] Elizabeth Carey Viscountess Mordaunt (age 47) died.

Around 1681 [his son] John Mordaunt was born to Charles Mordaunt 3rd Earl Peterborough 1st Earl Monmouth (age 23) and [his wife] Carey Fraser Countess Peterborough and Monmouth (age 21). He married 1708 his fourth cousin Frances Powlett, daughter of Charles Paulet 2nd Duke Bolton and Frances Ramsden, and had issue.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

On 19th June 1697 [his uncle] Henry Mordaunt 2nd Earl Peterborough (age 75) died. His nephew Charles (age 39) succeeded 3rd Earl Peterborough. His daughter Mary (age 38) succeeded 7th Baroness Mordaunt. [his wife] Carey Fraser Countess Peterborough and Monmouth (age 37) by marriage Countess Peterborough.

Siege of Barcelona

Between 14th September 1705 and 19th October 1705 a multinational Grand Alliance army led by Lord Peterborough (age 47) captured the city of Barcelona [Map] from its Spanish defenders, most of whom then joined the Grand Aliance army.

On 13th September 1705 Prince George of Hesse Darmstadt (age 36) was killed.

On 17th November 1705 Mary Mordaunt Duchess Norfolk (age 46) died. Her first cousin Charles (age 47) succeeded 8th Baron Mordaunt. Her husband John Germain 1st Baronet (age 55) inherited her Drayton estates and the rest of her inheritance, valued at £70,000.

Before 13th February 1707 [his son-in-law] Alexander Gordon 2nd Duke Gordon (age 29) and [his daughter] Henrietta Mordaunt Duchess Gordon were married. She the daughter of Charles Mordaunt 3rd Earl Peterborough 1st Earl Monmouth (age 49) and [his wife] Carey Fraser Countess Peterborough and Monmouth (age 47). The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England.
