Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

Biography of Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan 1728-1807

Paternal Family Tree: Cadogan

On 26th July 1717 [his father] Charles Cadogan 2nd Baron Cadogan [aged 32] and [his mother] Elizabeth Sloane Baroness Cadogan [aged 22] were married at Church of St George the Martyr, Queen Square. The marriage transferred the 250-acre (1.0 km2) Sloane estate in suburban Chelsea to the Cadogan family, which has been the basis of the family wealth ever since.

On 29th September 1728 Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan was born to [his father] Charles Cadogan 2nd Baron Cadogan [aged 43] and [his mother] Elizabeth Sloane Baroness Cadogan [aged 33].

On 30th May 1747 Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 18] and Frances Bromley [aged 19] were married.

On 29th November 1749 [his son] Charles Henry Sloane 2nd Earl Cadogan was born to Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 21] and [his wife] Frances Bromley [aged 21].

In 1768 [his wife] Frances Bromley [aged 39] died.

On 20th May 1768 [his mother] Elizabeth Sloane Baroness Cadogan [aged 73] died.

On 26th May 1773 [his daughter] Emily Maud Cadogan was born to Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 44] and [his future wife] Mary Churchill Countess Cadogan [aged 15]. She married 2nd June 1802 Reverend Gerald Valerian Wellesley, son of Garrett Wellesley 1st Earl Mornington and Anne Hill Countess Mornington, and had issue.

On 24th September 1776 [his father] Charles Cadogan 2nd Baron Cadogan [aged 91] died. His son Charles [aged 47] succeeded 3rd Baron Cadogan.

On 10th May 1777 Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 48] and Mary Churchill Countess Cadogan [aged 19] were married. The difference in their ages was 29 years.

Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

On 11th July 1781 [his daughter] Charlotte Cadogan Marchioness Anglesey was born to Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 52] and [his wife] Mary Churchill Countess Cadogan [aged 23]. She married (1) 20th September 1803 Henry Wellesley 1st Baron Cowley, son of Garrett Wellesley 1st Earl Mornington and Anne Hill Countess Mornington, and had issue (2) after 29th November 1810 Henry William Paget 1st Marquess Anglesey, son of Henry Bayly-Paget 1st Earl Uxbridge and Jane Champagné Countess Uxbridge, and had issue.

On 5th May 1783 [his son] George Cadogan 3rd Earl Cadogan was born to Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 54] and [his wife] Mary Churchill Countess Cadogan [aged 25] in St James' Square. He married 4th April 1810 Honoria Blake Countess Cadogan and had issue.

In 1796 Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 67] and Mary Churchill Countess Cadogan [aged 37] were divorced for her "criminal conversation" with Rev. Mr. Cooper.

The King has been pleased to grant the Dignities of Viscount and Earl of the Kingdom of Great Britain to the Right Honorable Charles Sloane Lord Cadogan [aged 72], and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Style, and Title of Viscount Chelsea, in the County of Middlesex, and Earl Cadogan. [[his former wife] Mary Churchill Countess Cadogan [aged 42] by marriage Countess Cadogan.]

The King has also been pleased to grant the Dignities of Viscount and Earl of the Kingdom of Great Britain to the Right Honorable James Lord Malmesbury [aged 54], Baron of Malmesbury, in the County of Wilts, Knight of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath, and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Style, and Title of Viscount Fitz-Harris, of Hurn Court, in the County of Southampton, and Earl of Malmesbury. On 2nd June 1802 [his son-in-law] Reverend Gerald Valerian Wellesley [aged 31] and Emily Maud Cadogan [aged 29] were married. She the daughter of Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 73] and Mary Churchill Countess Cadogan [aged 44]. He the son of Garrett Wellesley 1st Earl Mornington and Anne Hill Countess Mornington [aged 59].

On 20th September 1803 [his son-in-law] Henry Wellesley 1st Baron Cowley [aged 30] and Charlotte Cadogan Marchioness Anglesey [aged 22] were married. She the daughter of Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 74] and Mary Churchill Countess Cadogan [aged 45]. He the son of Garrett Wellesley 1st Earl Mornington and Anne Hill Countess Mornington [aged 61].

On 3rd April 1807 Charles Sloane Cadogan 1st Earl Cadogan [aged 78] died. His son Charles [aged 57] succeeded 2nd Earl Cadogan, 2nd Viscount Chelsea, 4th Baron Cadogan. He was by then a lunatic.

The Times. 14th February 1873. DEATH OF Baroness Cadogan. We have to announce the death of the [his granddaughter] Countess Cadogan [deceased], which occurred on Tuesday at Cadogan House, Belgravia. The deceased, who had long been an invalid, was the third daughter of the late [his former son-in-law] Hon. and Rev. Gerald V. Wesley D.D., and Lady Emily, eldest daughter of the first Earl Cadogan. She was born in February, 1812 [NOTE. Sources state 16th January 1808], and married July 13, 1836, her cousin, the present Lord Cadogan [aged 60], then Viscount Chelsea. She leaves issue four sons and a daughter.
