The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

Biography of Dean Edward Townshend 1719-1765

Paternal Family Tree: Townshend

Before 11th May 1711 [his father] Charles Townshend 2nd Viscount Townsend (age 37) and Elizabeth Pelham Viscountess Townsend were married. She by marriage Viscountess Townsend.

Before 25th July 1713 [his father] Charles Townshend 2nd Viscount Townsend (age 39) and [his mother] Dorothy Walpole Viscountess Townsend (age 26) were married. She by marriage Viscountess Townsend.

On 25th October 1719 Dean Edward Townshend was born to [his father] Charles Townshend 2nd Viscount Townsend (age 45) and [his mother] Dorothy Walpole Viscountess Townsend (age 33).

On 28th November 1722 [his brother-in-law] Charles Cornwallis 1st Earl Cornwallis (age 22) and [his half-sister] Elizabeth Townshend Countess Cornwallis were married.

On 29th May 1723 [his half-brother] Charles Townshend 3rd Viscount Townsend (age 22) and [his sister-in-law] Audrey aka Etheldreda Harrison (age 15) were married.

In 1724 [his father] Charles Townshend 2nd Viscount Townsend (age 49) was appointed 543rd Knight of the Garter by King George I (age 63).

On 29th March 1726 [his mother] Dorothy Walpole Viscountess Townsend (age 39) died although the circumstances are somewhat mysterious; possibly smallpox.

On 21st June 1738 [his father] Charles Townshend 2nd Viscount Townsend (age 64) died. His son [his half-brother] Charles (age 37) succeeded 3rd Viscount Townsend, 3rd Baron Townshend of Lynn Regis in Norfolk, 5th Baronet Townshend.

In 1743 Dean Edward Townshend (age 23) was ordained.

In 1745 Dean Edward Townshend (age 25) became Rector of St Mary's Church, Pulham St Mary.

In 1746 Dean Edward Townshend (age 26) was appointed Deputy Clerk of the Closet.

In 1748 Dean Edward Townshend (age 28) became Rector of Church of St Nicholas, Oakley.

In 1753 [his brother-in-law] Charles Cornwallis 1st Earl Cornwallis (age 52) was created 1st Earl Cornwallis. [his half-sister] Elizabeth Townshend Countess Cornwallis by marriage Countess Cornwallis.

In 1761 Dean Edward Townshend (age 41) was appointed Dean of Norwich.

On 12th March 1764 [his half-brother] Charles Townshend 3rd Viscount Townsend (age 63) died. His son [his nephew] George (age 40) succeeded 4th George Townshend 1st Marquess Townshend, 4th Baron Townshend of Lynn Regis in Norfolk, 6th Baronet Townshend. His son George succeeded 4th Viscount Townsend.

On 27th January 1765 Dean Edward Townshend (age 45) died in Bath, Somerset [Map].

[his daughter] Charlotte Townshend was born to Dean Edward Townshend. She married 12th May 1773 John Norris and had issue.
