Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall

Paternal Family Tree: Dering
On 17th July 1704 [his father] Cholmley Dering 4th Baronet [aged 25] and [his mother] Ellen aka Mary Fisher Lady Dering [aged 17] were married. She by marriage Lady Dering of Surrenden Dering in Kent.
In 1705 Edward Dering 5th Baronet was born to [his father] Cholmley Dering 4th Baronet [aged 25] and [his mother] Ellen aka Mary Fisher Lady Dering [aged 18].
In 1707 [his mother] Ellen aka Mary Fisher Lady Dering [aged 20] died.
On 9th May 1711 [his father] Cholmley Dering 4th Baronet [aged 31] was killed in a duel at Tothill Fields [Map]. His son Edward [aged 6] succeeded 5th Baronet Dering of Surrenden Dering in Kent. The duel, unusually with pistols rather than swords, was with Richard Thornhill with whom Dering had argued in a pub near Hampton Court Palace, Richmond [Map] two days previously; Thornhill had afterwards sent Dering a note challenging him to a duel. Both pistols were fired but only Dering was hit. Richard Thornhill was tried for murder but convicted of the lesser offence of manslaughter. Thornhill was murdered three months later.
On 20th August 1711 Richard Thornhill was murdered at Turnham Green Chiswick by two men who, as they killed him, allegedly invoked the name of [his father] Cholmley Dering 4th Baronet, who Thornhill had killed in a duel three months before.
On 31st January 1722 Edward Dering 5th Baronet [aged 17] matriculated Oriel College, Oxford University.
On 17th December 1725 Edward Dering 5th Baronet [aged 20] graduated with a MA from Oriel College, Oxford University.
In 1727 Edward Dering 5th Baronet [aged 22] stood for MP Kent but was unsuccessful.
On 24th February 1728 Edward Dering 5th Baronet [aged 23] and Elizabeth Henshaw Lady Dering were married. She by marriage Lady Dering of Surrenden Dering in Kent.
On 28th September 1732 [his son] Edward Dering 6th Baronet was born to Edward Dering 5th Baronet [aged 27] and [his wife] Elizabeth Henshaw Lady Dering. He married (1) in or before 1756 Selina Furnese, daughter of Robert Furnese 2nd Baronet, and had issue (2) in or before 1766 Deborah Winchester Lady Dering.
In 1733 Edward Dering 5th Baronet [aged 28] was elected MP Kent unopposed at a by-election. He held the seat until 1754.
This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

On or before 17th March 1735 [his wife] Elizabeth Henshaw Lady Dering died. She was buried at St Nicholas' Church, Pluckley on 17th March 1735.
Before 11th September 1735 Henry Mompesson and [his future wife] Mary Fotherby Lady Dering were married.
On 11th September 1735 Edward Dering 5th Baronet [aged 30] and Mary Fotherby Lady Dering were married at St Anne's Church, Soho [Map].
In or before 1756 [his son] Edward Dering 6th Baronet [aged 23] and [his daughter-in-law] Selina Furnese were married.
On 15th April 1762 Edward Dering 5th Baronet [aged 57] died. He was buried at St Nicholas' Church, Pluckley on 22nd April 1762. His son Edward [aged 29] succeeded 6th Baronet Dering of Surrenden Dering in Kent.
