The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy
The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. The narrative combines earlier historical sources with firsthand information and oral testimony to present an authoritative account of Normandy’s transformation from a Viking settlement into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful realms. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact. Today this classic work remains a foundational source for understanding Norman identity, medieval statesmanship, and the historical forces that reshaped England and Western Europe between 800AD and 1100AD.

In or before 1503 Edward Grey 3rd was born to [his father] John Grey 2nd Baron Grey of Powis (age 17) and [his mother] Margaret Dudley Baroness Grey Powis.
In 1504 [his father] John Grey 2nd Baron Grey of Powis (age 19) died. His son Edward (age 1) succeeded 3rd Baron Grey of Powis.
In 1525 Edward Grey 3rd (age 22) and Anne Brandon Baroness Grey Powis (age 18) were married. She by marriage Baroness Grey of Powis. She the illegitmate daughter of Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk (age 41) and Anne Browne. They were fifth cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry IV of England.
In 1533 Henry Grey 1st Duke of Suffolk (age 16) and [his sister-in-law] Frances Brandon Duchess of Suffolk (age 15) were married. She by marriage Marchioness Dorset. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk (age 49) and Mary Tudor Queen Consort France (age 36). He the son of Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset and Margaret Wotton Marchioness Dorset (age 46). They were half second cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
On 25th June 1533 Mary Tudor Queen Consort France (age 37) died at Westhorpe, Suffolk [Map]. She was buried at the monastery of St. Edmondsbury [Map] on 22nd July 1533. Her daughter [his sister-in-law] Frances (age 15) was Chief Mourner.
On 1st March 1534 [his brother-in-law] Henry Brandon (age 11) died at Southwark, Surrey [Map]. Earl Lincoln extinct.
In 1538 [his wife] Anne Brandon Baroness Grey Powis (age 31) left her husband Edward Grey 3rd (age 35) for Randal Haworth.
In 1540 Edward Grey 3rd (age 37) petitioned the Privy Council to punish his wife [his wife] Anne (age 33) for adultery, and also accused Anne and Randal Haworth of conspiring to murder him. No action was taken against Anne, and she remained with Randal Haworth; however, this scandalous arrangement caused her to be excluded from [his father-in-law] Charles Brandon's (age 56) will.
On 22nd August 1545 [his father-in-law] Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk (age 61) died. His son [his brother-in-law] Henry (age 9) succeeded 2nd Duke Suffolk, 2nd Viscount Lisle.
On 2nd July 1551 Edward Grey 3rd (age 48) died of sweating sickness. Baron Grey of Powis abeyant.
By an inquisition taken at Montgomery, 5 Edward VI, 1551, after the death of Edward last Lord Powes, it appears "that Edward Grey Lord Powes in his life suffered a recovery, and made a deed of feoffment, and made a will and codicil, whereby in default of lawful issue of his own body, he limited the inheritance of his whole estate to Edward Grey, his bastard son by Jane Orwell, daughter of Sir Lewis Orwell, Knight, and the other heirs of his body, with remainders to his daughters by the said Jane Orwell, and the heirs of their bodies, successively, with remainders in fee to his own right heirs." And the jury find, that the said Edward Grey was his consanguineus et heres in remanen', which, by a decree of the Court of Wards, 27 Elizabeth, hereafter mentioned, is explained to be hæres factus. Henry Machyn's Diary. The vij day of July begane a nuw swet in London, and ... ded my lord Crumwell (deceased) in Leseter-shyre, and was bered [with a stand]ard, a baner of armes, and cote, elmett, sword, targett, and sc [ochyons, and] harold; and the sam tyme ded my lord Powes (deceased), and the x day [at W]ollwyche, sir John Lutterell (age 32), knyght, a nobull captayne.
Note. Death of lord Cromwell. Gregory lord Cromwell died on the 4th of July 1551, and was buried at Laund in Leicestershire: his mural monument there is engraved in Nichols's History of that County, vol. iii. pl. xlv.
Note. Death of lord Powis. Edward third lord Grey of Powis. The funeral of his widow, a daughter of Charles Brandon, duke of Suffolk, occurs in p. 163.
Note. Sir John Luttrell, of Dunster castle, co. Somerset, knighted at the taking of Leith in 1547, and made a knight banneret soon after, at the taking of Yester. Just before his death he had been divorced from his wife, for Strype notices "A Commission to sir William Petre, secretary, sir Richard Read, &c. upon due proof of the manifest adultery of the lady Mary Luttrel, to separate and divorce her from sir John Luttrel her husband. Dated in June, 1551." (Memorials, Book ii. chap. 29.) She was the daughter of sir John Griffith, K.B. and was remarried to James Godolphin, of Cornwall.
Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.
