Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 16th December 1547 [his father] Alexander Unton [aged 53] died.
After 16th December 1547 [his step-father] Robert Keilway [aged 50] and [his mother] Cecily Bulstrode [aged 32] were married.
On 3rd June 1550 John Dudley 2nd Earl Warwick [aged 23] and [his future wife] Anne Seymour Countess of Warwick [aged 12] were married at Sheen Palace [Map]. She the daughter of Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset [aged 50] and [his future mother-in-law] Anne Stanhope Duchess Somerset [aged 53]. He the son of John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 46] and Jane Guildford Duchess Northumberland [aged 41]. They were fifth cousin once removed. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
In January 1553 John Dudley 2nd Earl Warwick [aged 26] by writ of acceleration 2nd Earl Warwick through a summons to Parliament. [his future wife] Anne Seymour Countess of Warwick [aged 15] by marriage Countess Warwick.
In 1554 Edward Unton [aged 20] was elected MP Malmesbury.
In 1554 Edward Unton [aged 20] was elected MP Oxfordshire.
In or after 1555 [his daughter] Anne Unton was born to Edward Unton [aged 21] and [his future wife] Anne Seymour Countess of Warwick [aged 17]. She married before 9th December 1618 Valentine Knightley and had issue.
On 29th April 1555 Edward Unton [aged 21] and Anne Seymour Countess of Warwick [aged 17] were married. They had seven children. She the daughter of Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset and Anne Stanhope Duchess Somerset [aged 58].
Around 1556 [his son] Edward Unton was born to Edward Unton [aged 22] and [his wife] Anne Seymour Countess of Warwick [aged 18]. He married (1) in or before 1579 Dorothea Knightley (2) 1579 his half fifth cousin once removed Katherine Hastings, daughter of George Hastings 4th Earl Huntingdon and Dorothy Port Countess Huntingdon.
Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

She by marriage Countess Hertford. She the daughter of Henry Grey 1st Duke of Suffolk and Frances Brandon Duchess of Suffolk. He the son of Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset and [his mother-in-law] Anne Stanhope Duchess Somerset [aged 63]. They were sixth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
Around 1561 [his daughter] Cicely Unton was born to Edward Unton [aged 27] and [his wife] Anne Seymour Countess of Warwick [aged 23]. She married (1) before 10th August 1593 her fourth cousin once removed John Wentworth and had issue (2) after 1605 Edward Hoby.

Sir Edward Unton, K.B. on the 29th April, 1555, married Anne, one of the daughters of the protector Somerset, and widow of John Dudley, earl of Warwick, the eldest son of John duke of Northumberland. Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough
A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

On 21st February 1581 [his step-father] Robert Keilway [aged 84] died. His only child [his half-sister] Anne Keilway Baroness Harington [aged 27] and her husband [his brother-in-law] John Harington 1st Baron Harington [aged 41] inherited the Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire [Map] and Coombe Abbey [Map] estates.
In 1582 [his brother-in-law] Edward Seymour 1st Earl Hertford [aged 42] and Frances Howard Countess Hertford [aged 28] were married. She by marriage Countess Hertford. He the son of Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset and [his mother-in-law] Anne Stanhope Duchess Somerset [aged 85]. They were half sixth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England.
On 16th September 1582 Edward Unton [aged 48] died. He was buried at All Saints' Church, Faringdon. The inscription on his monument ... Here lyeth Sir Edward Unton, Knight of the Noble Order of the Bathe, whoe married [his wife] Anne Countess of Warwick [aged 44], daughter of Edwarde Seymer Duke of Somersett and Protector of England, by whome he had ffive sonnes, whereof 3 died younge in the life of their father; Two, namelye Edwarde [aged 26] and Henry [aged 24] onely, survyved and succeeded him, the one after the other in their father's inheritance; and two daughters, Anne [aged 27] married to Sir Valentine Knightley [aged 27], Knight, and Scissil [aged 21] married to John Wentworth [aged 18], Esquire.
In 1588 [his former wife] Anne Seymour Countess of Warwick [aged 50] died.
