The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

In 1509 [her father] Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset [aged 31] and [her mother] Margaret Wotton Marchioness Dorset [aged 22] were married. She by marriage Marchioness Dorset. He the son of [her grandfather] Thomas Grey 1st Marquess Dorset and [her grandmother] Cecily Bonville Marchioness Dorset [aged 48].
On 9th October 1514 Louis XII King France [aged 52] and Mary Tudor Queen Consort France [aged 18] were married at Abbeville [Map], Somme. She by marriage Queen Consort France. [her father] Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset [aged 37], Thomas West 8th Baron De La Warr 5th Baron West [aged 57], Thomas Brooke 8th Baron Cobham [aged 44] and his son George Brooke 9th Baron Cobham [aged 17], Bishop Thomas Ruthall [aged 42] and [her mother] Margaret Wotton Marchioness Dorset [aged 27] attended. The difference in their ages was 33 years. She the daughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland and Elizabeth York Queen Consort England. He the son of Charles Valois Duke Orléans and Mary de la Marck Duchess Orléans. They were second cousin twice removed.
On 10th October 1530 [her father] Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset [aged 53] died. His son [her brother] Henry [aged 13] succeeded 3rd Marquess Dorset, 3rd Earl Huntingdon, 9th Baron Ferrers of Groby, 9th Baron Harington, 4th Baron Bonville.
In 1533 [her brother] Henry Grey 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 16] and [her sister-in-law] Frances Brandon Duchess of Suffolk [aged 15] were married. She by marriage Marchioness Dorset. She the daughter of Charles Brandon 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 49] and Mary Tudor Queen Consort France [aged 36]. He the son of [her father] Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset and [her mother] Margaret Wotton Marchioness Dorset [aged 46]. They were half second cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
On 6th October 1535 [her mother] Margaret Wotton Marchioness Dorset [aged 48] died.
Before 1538 [her future husband] Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden [aged 49] and Christina or Margaret Barnardiston [aged 47] were married.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

Wriothesley's Chronicle [1508-1562]. 22nd April 1538. This yeare, the morrowe after Easter dale, being the twentie towe daie of Aprill, Sir Thomas Awdeley [aged 50], knight, Lord Chauncelor of Englande, was married to my Ladie Elizabeth Graie,a sister to the Lord Marques of Dorsett [aged 21] now living, and daughter to the old Lord Marques late deceased.
Note. Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden and were married. She by marriage Baroness Audley Walden in Essex. She the daughter of Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset and Margaret Wotton Marchioness Dorset.
Note a. Elizabeth Grey, eldest daughter of Thomas fifth Marquis of Dorset, and sister of Henry, who succeeded to the title in 1530.
On 29th November 1538 [her husband] Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden [aged 50] was created 1st Baron Audley Walden in Essex.
In 1540 [her daughter] Margaret Audley Duchess Norfolk was born to [her husband] Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden [aged 52] and Elizabeth Grey Baroness Audley. She married (1) before 22nd August 1553 her third cousin once removed Henry Dudley, son of John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland and Jane Guildford Duchess Northumberland (2) 1558 her fourth cousin Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk and had issue.
Letters and Papers Foreign and Domestic Henry VIII 1541. On St. Peter's eve [28th June 1541] lord Leonard [aged 62], uncle of the Marquis of Osceter [aged 24] (Dorset) and of the Chancellor's [aged 53] wife, was beheaded in front of the Tower [Map]. Hears he was accused of letting his nephew [aged 16], the young Earl of Kildare, escape to France and thence to Liege.
On 23rd December 1543 Henry VIII [aged 52] enobled his new wife's [aged 31] brother [aged 31] and uncle [aged 60] at ceremony in the Presence Chamber, Hampton Court Palace [Map]. Henry Grey 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 26] and Edward Stanley 3rd Earl of Derby [aged 34] were present. Christopher Barker read the Patents.
William Parr 1st Baron Parr of Horton was created 1st Baron Parr of Horton. William was sixty with five daughters. He died four years later at which time the Barony became extinct.
William Parr 1st Marquess Northampton was created 1st Earl Essex. His estranged wife Anne Bourchier 7th Baroness Bourchier [aged 26] was daughter of the last Earl of Essex of the Fifth Creation. A somewhat curious choice given his wife had eloped the year previous year with John Lyngfield, the prior of Tandbridge, Surrey [Map], by whom she had an illegitimate child.
On 30th April 1544 [her husband] Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden [aged 56] died. He was buried at Saffron Walden, Essex [Map]. Baron Audley Walden in Essex extinct.
Before 22nd August 1553 [her son-in-law] Henry Dudley [aged 22] and [her daughter] Margaret Audley Duchess Norfolk [aged 13] were married. He the son of John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 49] and Jane Guildford Duchess Northumberland [aged 44]. They were third cousin once removed.
On 23rd February 1554 [her brother] Henry Grey 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 37] was beheaded at Tower Hill [Map]. Duke Suffolk, Marquess Dorset, Earl Huntingdon, Baron Ferrers of Groby, Baron Harington, Baron Bonville forfeit.

In 1558 [her son-in-law] Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk [aged 21] and [her daughter] Margaret Audley Duchess Norfolk [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Duchess Norfolk, Countess Surrey. They were fourth cousins.
In 1562 [her son] Thomas Audley of Berechurch died.
In 1564 Elizabeth Grey Baroness Audley died.
