The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 29th June 1887 Francis Stapleton-Cotton 4th Viscount Combermere was born to Robert Wellington Stapleton-Cotton 3rd Viscount Combermere (age 42) and Isabel Marion Chetwynd Viscountess Combermere.
In 1898 [his father] Robert Wellington Stapleton-Cotton 3rd Viscount Combermere (age 53) died. His son Francis (age 10) succeeded 4th Viscount Combermere, 4th Baron Combermere, 9th Baronet Cotton of Combermere in Cheshire. [his future wife] Louisa Agnew (age 6) by marriage Viscountess Combermere.
On 30th October 1917 Francis Stapleton-Cotton 4th Viscount Combermere (age 30) and Louisa Hazel Agnew Viscountess Combermere (age 26) were married.
In 1926 Francis Stapleton-Cotton 4th Viscount Combermere (age 38) and Louisa Hazel Agnew Viscountess Combermere (age 34) were divorced.
On 1st January 1927 Francis Stapleton-Cotton 4th Viscount Combermere (age 39) and Constance Marie Katherine Williams-Drummond (age 33) were married. She a first cousin of his first wife Louisa Hazel Agnew Viscountess Combermere (age 35).
On 8th August 1929 [his son] Michael Wellington Stapleton-Cotton 5th Viscount Combermere was born to Francis Stapleton-Cotton 4th Viscount Combermere (age 42) and [his wife] Constance Marie Katherine Williams-Drummond (age 36).
On 17th September 1930 [his mother] Isabel Marion Chetwynd Viscountess Combermere died.
On 6th March 1932 [his son] Captain David Peter Dudley Stapleton-Cotton was born to Francis Stapleton-Cotton 4th Viscount Combermere (age 44) and [his wife] Constance Marie Katherine Williams-Drummond (age 38).
On 15th April 1943 [his former wife] Louisa Hazel Agnew Viscountess Combermere (age 51) died.
In 1955 [his son] Captain David Peter Dudley Stapleton-Cotton (age 22) and [his daughter-in-law] Susan Nomakepu Albu were married.
On 29th June 1968 [his wife] Constance Marie Katherine Williams-Drummond (age 75) died.
On 8th February 1969 Francis Stapleton-Cotton 4th Viscount Combermere (age 81) died. His son [his son] Michael (age 39) succeeded 5th Viscount Combermere, 5th Baron Combermere, 10th Baronet Cotton of Combermere in Cheshire.
