The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. The narrative combines earlier historical sources with firsthand information and oral testimony to present an authoritative account of Normandy’s transformation from a Viking settlement into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful realms. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact. Today this classic work remains a foundational source for understanding Norman identity, medieval statesmanship, and the historical forces that reshaped England and Western Europe between 800AD and 1100AD.

Biography of George Finch-Hatton 1747-1823

Paternal Family Tree: Finch

On 9th September 1746 [his father] Edward Finch-Hatton (age 49) and [his mother] Elizabeth Palmer (age 37) were married. He the son of [his grandfather] Daniel Finch 2nd Earl Nottingham 7th Earl Winchilsea and [his grandmother] Anne Hatton Countess Nottingham and Winchelsea.

On 30th June 1747 George Finch-Hatton was born to [his father] Edward Finch-Hatton (age 50) and [his mother] Elizabeth Palmer (age 37).

On 16th May 1771 [his father] Edward Finch-Hatton (age 74) died.

In 1772 George Finch-Hatton (age 24) was elected MP Rochester.

In 1774 George Finch-Hatton (age 26) was elected MP Rochester.

In 1776 George Finch-Hatton (age 28) was elected Fellow of the Royal Society.

In 1780 George Finch-Hatton (age 32) was elected MP Rochester.

Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

On 10th December 1785 George Finch-Hatton (age 38) and Elizabeth Murray (age 25) were married. She the daughter of David Murray 2nd Earl Mansfield (age 58) and Henrietta Frederica von Bünau.

In 1791 [his mother] Elizabeth Palmer (age 81) died.

On 19th May 1791 [his son] George Finch-Hatton 5th Earl Nottingham 10th Earl Winchilsea was born to George Finch-Hatton (age 43) and [his wife] Elizabeth Murray (age 31) at Kirby Hall, Gretton. He married (1) 26th July 1814 his sixth cousin Georgiana Charlotte Graham Countess Nottingham Winchelsea, daughter of James Graham 3rd Duke Montrose and Caroline Maria Montagu Duchess Montrose, and had issue (2) 15th February 1837 his third cousin twice removed Emily Georgiana Bagot Countess Winchilsea Nottingham (3) 17th October 1849 Fanny Margaretta Rice Countess Nottingham Winchilsea and had issue.

In 1795 [his son] Reverend Daniel Heneage Finch-Hatton was born to George Finch-Hatton (age 47) and [his wife] Elizabeth Murray (age 34). He married 15th December 1825 Louisa Greville, daughter of Robert Fulke Greville and Louisa Cathcart 2nd Countess Mansfield, and had issue.

On 1st September 1796 [his father-in-law] David Murray 2nd Earl Mansfield (age 68) died. His son [his brother-in-law] David (age 19) succeeded 3rd Earl Mansfield in Middlesex, 8th Viscount Stormont.

On 16th September 1797 [his brother-in-law] David William Murray 3rd Earl of Mansfield (age 20) and Frederica Markham Countess Mansfield (age 23) were married. She by marriage Countess Mansfield in Middlesex. She the daughter of Archbishop William Markham (age 78). He the son of [his father-in-law] David Murray 2nd Earl Mansfield and Louisa Cathcart 2nd Countess Mansfield (age 39).

On 26th July 1814 [his son] George Finch-Hatton 5th Earl Nottingham 10th Earl Winchilsea (age 23) and [his daughter-in-law] Georgiana Charlotte Graham Countess Nottingham Winchelsea (age 20) were married. She the daughter of James Graham 3rd Duke Montrose (age 58) and Caroline Maria Montagu Duchess Montrose. They were sixth cousins.

On 17th February 1823 George Finch-Hatton (age 75) died.
