Before 2nd October 1824 [his father] George John Milles 4th Baron Sondes of Lees Court (age 30) and [his mother] Eleanor Knatchbull were married.

On 2nd October 1824 George Milles 1st was born to [his father] George John Milles 4th Baron Sondes of Lees Court (age 30) and [his mother] Eleanor Knatchbull.

On 14th March 1836 [his uncle] Lewis Richard Watson 3rd Baron Sondes of Lees Court (age 43) unmarried. [his father] George John Milles 4th Baron Sondes of Lees Court (age 42) succeeded 4th Baron Sondes.

On 22nd July 1845 [his brother-in-law] Edward Fellowes 1st Baron de Ramsey of Ramsey Abbey (age 36) and [his sister] Mary Julia Milles Baroness de Ramsay were married.

In 1859 George Milles 1st (age 34) and Charlote Stracey were married.

On 11th May 1861 [his son] George Milles-Lade 2nd Earl Sondes was born to George Milles 1st (age 36) and [his wife] Charlote Stracey.

In 1864 [his daughter] Constance Grace Milles was born to George Milles 1st (age 39) and [his wife] Charlote Stracey. She married 1st October 1885 Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Gore and had issue.

In 1866 [his son] Lewis Milles 3rd Earl Sondes was born to George Milles 1st (age 41) and [his wife] Charlote Stracey.

On 24th November 1867 [his son] Henry Milles was born to George Milles 1st (age 43) and [his wife] Charlote Stracey.

In 1868 George Milles 1st (age 43) was elected MP East Kent.

On 17th December 1874 [his father] George John Milles 4th Baron Sondes of Lees Court (age 80) died. His son George (age 50) succeeded 5th Baron Sondes.

On 4th May 1880 George Milles 1st (age 55) was created 1st Earl Sondes, 1st Viscount Throwley.

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

On 10th September 1894 George Milles 1st (age 69) died. His son George (age 33) succeeded 2nd Earl Sondes, 2nd Viscount Throwley, 6th Baron Sondes.
