Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

Biography of George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet 1832-1913

Paternal Family Tree: Wombwell

On 23rd June 1824 [his father] George Wombwell 3rd Baronet (age 32) and [his mother] Georgiana Hunter were married.

On 25th November 1832 George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet was born to [his father] George Wombwell 3rd Baronet (age 40) and [his mother] Georgiana Hunter.

On 28th October 1846 [his grandfather] George Wombwell 2nd Baronet (age 77) died. His son [his father] George (age 54) succeeded 3rd Baronet Wombwell of Wombwell in Yorkshire.

Charge of the Light Brigade

On 25th October 1854 during the Battle of Balaclava George Charles Bingham 3rd Earl Lucan (age 54) gave the order for the Charge of the Light Brigade which was then led by his brother-in-law James Brudenell 7th Earl Cardigan (age 57).

Hedworth Jolliffe 2nd Baron Hylton (age 25) took part.

Godfrey Morgan 1st Viscount Tredegar (age 23) was in command of a section of the Light Brigade. His horse "Sir Briggs" survived, died aged twenty-eight and was buried in the Cedar Garden at Tredegar House, Monmouthshire where there is a monument to him.

Thomas Hutton took part. He was shot through the right thigh during the advance, and on returning from the guns he was again severely wounded through the left thigh.

George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 21) took part and survived. His horse was killed under him and he was shortly after pulled off and taken prisoner, his sword and pistols being taken from him by some Russian Lancers. He managed to escape, catch another loose horse and ride back to the British lines, pursued by Russians.

Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis (age 22) took part.

On 14th January 1855 [his father] George Wombwell 3rd Baronet (age 62) died. His son George (age 22) succeeded 4th Baronet Wombwell of Wombwell in Yorkshire.

On 3rd September 1861 George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 28) and Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 19) were married. She the daughter of George Child-Villiers 6th Earl Jersey and Julia Peel Countess Jersey.

In 1862 [his daughter] Julia Georgiana Wombwell Countess Dartrey was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 29) and [his wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 19). She married (1) 1882 Vesey Dawson 2nd Earl of Dartrey (2) 1933 John Townshend St Aubyn 2nd Baron St Levan, son of John St Aubyn 1st Baron St Levan and Elizabeth Clementina Townshend Baroness St Levan.

On 25th October 1864 [his daughter] Cecilia Clementia Wombwell was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 31) and [his wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 22). She married 28th July 1890 William Dudgeon Graham Menzies and had issue.

In 1865 [his son] George Wombwell was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 32) and [his wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 22).

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

In 1867 [his son] Stephen Frederick Wombwell was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 34) and [his wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 24).

On 19th September 1872 [his brother-in-law] Victor Albert George Child-Villiers 7th Earl Jersey (age 27) and Margaret Elizabeth Leigh Countess Jersey (age 22) were married. She by marriage Countess Jersey. He the son of George Child-Villiers 6th Earl Jersey and [his mother-in-law] Julia Peel Countess Jersey. They were half fourth cousins.

In 1882 [his son-in-law] Vesey Dawson 2nd Earl of Dartrey (age 39) and [his daughter] Julia Georgiana Wombwell Countess Dartrey (age 20) were married.

In 1889 [his son] George Wombwell (age 24) died at Meerut in India on active service.

On 28th July 1890 [his son-in-law] William Dudgeon Graham Menzies and [his daughter] Cecilia Clementia Wombwell (age 25) were married.

1901. Monument at St Michael's Church, Coxwold, North Yorkshire [Map] to [his son] George Wombwell and [his son] Stephen Frederick Wombwell (age 34), only sons of George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 68), who both died on active service. Sculpted by Emil Fuchs (age 34).

George Wombwell: In 1865 he was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet and Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell. In 1889 George Wombwell died at Meerut in India on active service.

Stephen Frederick Wombwell: In 1867 he was born to George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet and Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell. In 1901 Stephen Frederick Wombwell died of enteric fever at Vryburg in South Africa during the Second Boer War while serving as a captain with the Imperial Yeomanry.

Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell: On 11th May 1842 she was born to George Child-Villiers 6th Earl Jersey and Julia Peel Countess Jersey. On 3rd September 1861 George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet and she were married. She the daughter of George Child-Villiers 6th Earl Jersey and Julia Peel Countess Jersey. On 24th October 1921 Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell died.

On 16th October 1913 George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 80) died. He was buried at St Michael's Church, Coxwold, North Yorkshire [Map]. He was the last surviving officer of the Charge of the Light Brigade. His brother [his brother] Henry (age 73) succeeded 5th Baronet Wombwell of Wombwell in Yorkshire.

On 24th October 1921 [his former wife] Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers Lady Wombwell (age 79) died.
