In 1825 [his father] William Jolliffe 1st Baron Hylton (age 24) and [his mother] Eleanor Paget were married.

On 23rd June 1829 Hedworth Jolliffe 2nd Baron Hylton was born to William Jolliffe 1st Baron Hylton (age 28) and Eleanor Paget.

Battle of Alma

On 20th September 1854 Charles Pierrepont Darcy Lane-Fox (age 24) was wounded, Poulett George Henry Somerset (age 32) fought.

Major-General John Douglas (age 37) commanded the 79th Regiment of Foot.

William Frederick Waldegrave (age 38) died from wounds received.

Henry Hugh Manvers Percy (age 37) was shot through the arm.

General George Augustus Frederick Paget (age 36), Godfrey Morgan 1st Viscount Tredegar (age 23) and Hedworth Jolliffe 2nd Baron Hylton (age 25) fought.

Arthur Williams-Wynn (age 35), Captain of the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers, was killed.

Charge of the Light Brigade

On 25th October 1854 Hedworth Jolliffe 2nd Baron Hylton (age 25) took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade.

Godfrey Morgan 1st Viscount Tredegar (age 23) was in command of a section of the Light Brigade. His horse "Sir Briggs" survived, died aged twenty-eight and was buried in the Cedar Garden at Tredegar House, Monmouthshire where there is a monument to him.

Thomas Hutton took part. He was shot through the right thigh during the advance, and on returning from the guns he was again severely wounded through the left thigh.

George Orby Wombwell 4th Baronet (age 21) took part and survived. His horse was killed under him and he was shortly after pulled off and taken prisoner, his sword and pistols being taken from him by some Russian Lancers. He managed to escape, catch another loose horse and ride back to the British lines, pursued by Russians.

Fiennes Wykeham-Martin Cornwallis (age 22) took part.

Battle of Inkerman

On 5th November 1854 at the Battle of Inkerman ...

Granville Charles Cornwallis Eliot (age 26) and Cavendish Hubert Greville (age 19) were killed.

Poulett George Henry Somerset (age 32) fought; his horse was killed under him by a shell.

William Archer Amherst 3rd Earl Amherst (age 18) was wounded.

Hedworth Jolliffe 2nd Baron Hylton (age 25) and Edwyn Sherard Burnaby (age 24) fought.

Captain William Kent Allix (age 31) was killed in action whilst serving with the 1st Royal Regiment.

Robert Lydston Newman 2nd Baronet (age 32) was killed in action. His brother Lydston (age 30) succeeded 3rd Baronet Newman of Stokeley and Mamhead in Devon.

Charles Francis Seymour-Conway (age 35) was killed in action.

In 1858 Hedworth Jolliffe 2nd Baron Hylton (age 28) and Agnes Mary Georgiana Byng (age 24) were married. She the daughter of George Byng 2nd Earl Strafford (age 51) and Agnes Paget. They were second cousins.

In 1859 [his brother-in-law] Francis Edmund Cecil Byng 5th Earl Strafford (age 23) was appointed Rector Little Casterton Rutland.

On 8th June 1859 [his brother-in-law] Francis Edmund Cecil Byng 5th Earl Strafford (age 24) and Florence Louisa Miles (age 19) were married. He the son of [his father-in-law] George Byng 2nd Earl Strafford (age 53) and Agnes Paget.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 15th October 1863 [his brother-in-law] Henry Byng 4th Earl Strafford (age 32) and Henrietta Louisa Elizabeth Danneskiold Samsøe (age 27) were married. He the son of [his father-in-law] George Byng 2nd Earl Strafford (age 57) and Agnes Paget. They were fourth cousins.

In 1865 [his brother-in-law] George Byng 3rd Earl Strafford (age 34) was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Poor Law Board.

In 1865 [his brother-in-law] Henry Byng 4th Earl Strafford (age 33) was appointed Coldstream Guards: Supernumary Major.

In 1866 [his brother-in-law] George Byng 3rd Earl Strafford (age 35) was appointed President of Middlesex County Cricket Club.

On 4th August 1866 [his brother-in-law] Francis Edmund Cecil Byng 5th Earl Strafford (age 31) and Emily Georgina Kerr Countess Strafford (age 19) were married. He the son of [his father-in-law] George Byng 2nd Earl Strafford (age 60) and Agnes Paget. They were fifth cousins.

In 1867 [his brother-in-law] Francis Edmund Cecil Byng 5th Earl Strafford (age 31) was appointed Honorary Chaplain: Queen Victoria.

On 19th January 1867 [his father] William Jolliffe 1st Baron Hylton (age 66) and [his step-mother] Sophia Penelope Sheffield Countess Ilchester (age 25) were married. She by marriage Baroness Hylton of Hylton in County Durham. The difference in their ages was 41 years.

In 1871 [his brother-in-law] George Byng 3rd Earl Strafford (age 40) was appointed Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

In 1872 [his brother-in-law] Henry Byng 4th Earl Strafford (age 40) was appointed Groom in Waiting.

In 1872 [his brother-in-law] Francis Edmund Cecil Byng 5th Earl Strafford (age 36) was appointed Chaplain in Ordinary.

In 1872 Hedworth Jolliffe 2nd Baron Hylton (age 42) and Agnes Mary Georgiana Byng (age 38) were divorced.

In 1874 [his former brother-in-law] Henry Byng 4th Earl Strafford (age 42) was appointed Equerry.

In 1874 [his former brother-in-law] Francis Edmund Cecil Byng 5th Earl Strafford (age 38) was appointed Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons.

On 1st June 1876 [his father] William Jolliffe 1st Baron Hylton (age 75) died. His son Hedworth (age 46) succeeded 2nd Baron Hylton of Hylton in County Durham.

In 1877 [his former brother-in-law] George Byng 3rd Earl Strafford (age 46) was appointed President of Middlesex County Cricket Club.

On 7th April 1878 [his former wife] Agnes Mary Georgiana Byng (age 44) died.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." She the daughter of Frederick William John Hervey 3rd Marquess of Bristol (age 61) and Geraldine Anson Marchioness of Bristol (age 62). They were half fifth cousins.

On 31st October 1899 Hedworth Jolliffe 2nd Baron Hylton (age 70) died. His son [his son] Hylton (age 36) succeeded 3rd Baron Hylton of Hylton in County Durham. [his daughter-in-law] Alice Adeliza Hervey Baroness Hylton (age 25) by marriage Baroness Hylton of Hylton in County Durham.
