Biography of Henry Digby 1st Earl Digby 1731-1793

Paternal Family Tree: Digby

On 10th July 1729 [his father] Edward Digby (age 36) and [his step-mother] Charlotte Fox (age 23) were married.

On 21st July 1731 Henry Digby 1st Earl Digby was born to Edward Digby (age 38).

On 2nd October 1746 [his father] Edward Digby (age 53) died.

In 1755 Henry Digby 1st Earl Digby (age 23) was elected MP Ludgershall.

On 30th November 1757 [his half-brother] Edward Digby 6th Baron Digby (age 27) died. His brother Henry (age 26) succeeded 7th Baron Digby of Geashill in County Offaly.

In 1761 Henry Digby 1st Earl Digby (age 29) was elected MP Wells.

In 1765 Henry Digby 1st Earl Digby (age 33) was created 1st Baron Digby of Sherbourne in Dorset.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 25th September 1793 Henry Digby 1st Earl Digby (age 62) died. His son [his son] Edward (age 20) succeeded 2nd Earl Digby, 8th Baron Digby of Geashill in County Offaly, 2nd Baron Digby of Sherbourne in Dorset.
