Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

Biography of Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland 1788-1864

On 17th September 1787 William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland (age 21) and Catharine Margaret Powlett Countess Darlington (age 21) were married at her father's seat Hackwood Park, Hampshire. She the daughter of Harry Powlett 6th Duke Bolton (age 66) and Katherine Lowther Duchess of Bolton (age 51). He the son of Henry Vane 2nd Earl Darlington (age 60) and Margaret Lowther Countess Darlington (age 59). They were first cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 6th January 1788 Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland was born to [his father] William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland (age 21) and [his mother] Catharine Margaret Powlett Countess Darlington (age 22). He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. Coefficient of inbreeding 6.45%.

On 10th September 1800 [his grandmother] Margaret Lowther Countess Darlington (age 72) died. She has a monument sculpted by Richard Cooke at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map] commissioned by her son [his father] William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland (age 34).

Margaret Lowther Countess Darlington: In 1728 she was born to Robert Lowther and Katherine Pennington. On 19th March 1757 Henry Vane 2nd Earl Darlington and she were married at London. He the son of Henry Vane 1st Earl Darlington and Grace Fitzroy Countess Darlington. On 6th March 1758 Henry Vane 1st Earl Darlington died. His son Henry succeeded 2nd Earl Darlington, 2nd Viscount Barnard, 4th Baron Barnard. She by marriage Countess Darlington.

On 17th June 1807 [his mother] Catharine Margaret Powlett Countess Darlington (age 41) died at Cleveland House.

On 14th July 1808 Henrietta Laura Johnstone aka Pulteney 1st Countess Bath (age 41) died. Earl Bath extinct. She left her personal estate to her cousin Elizabeth Evelyn Sutton and her husband John Fawcett aka Pulteney (age 41) who adopted the surname Pulteney in 1813. The landed estates were claimed by [his father] William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland (age 41) who was a descendant of Anne Pulteney Duchess Southampton Duchess of Cleveland.

On 18th November 1809 Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland (age 21) and Sophia Paulett Duchess of Cleveland (age 24) were married at St George's Church, Hanover Square. She the daughter of John Paulett 4th Earl Paulett (age 53) and Sophia Pocock Countess Paulett. He the son of William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland (age 43) and Catharine Margaret Powlett Countess Darlington.

In 1812 Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland (age 23) was elected MP County Durham which seat he held until 1815.

On 3rd July 1815 [his brother] William Vane 3rd Duke Cleveland (age 23) and [his sister-in-law] Grace Caroline Lowther Duchess of Cleveland were married at St James' Church, Piccadilly. She the daughter of William Lowther 1st Earl Lonsdale (age 57) and Augusta Fane Countess Lonsdale (age 53). He the son of [his father] William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland (age 48) and [his mother] Catharine Margaret Powlett Countess Darlington. They were half fifth cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

In 1816 Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland (age 27) was elected MP Winchelsea which seat he held until 1818.

In 1818 Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland (age 29) was elected MP Tregony which seat he held until 1830.

In 1830 Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland (age 41) was elected MP Saltash which seat he held until 1831.

In 1832 Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland (age 43) was elected MP South Shropshire which seat he held until 1842.

In 1839 [his father] William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland (age 72) was appointed 684th Knight of the Garter by Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom (age 19).

On 28th January 1842 [his father] William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland (age 75) died. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map]. His son Henry (age 54) succeeded 2nd Duke of Cleveland, 2nd Marquess of Cleveland, 4th Earl Darlington, 4th Viscount Barnard, 6th Baron Barnard, 2nd Baron Raby of Raby Castle in County Durham. [his wife] Sophia Paulett Duchess of Cleveland (age 56) by marriage Duchess of Cleveland.

On 2nd August 1854 [his brother] Harry George Powlett 4th Duke Cleveland (age 51) and [his sister-in-law] Catherine Lucy Wilhelmina Stanhope Duchess of Cleveland (age 35) were married at Chevening, Sevenoaks. She the daughter of Philip Henry Stanhope 4th Earl Stanhope (age 72) and Catherine Lucy Smith Countess Stanhope. He the son of [his father] William Henry Vane 1st Duke Cleveland and [his mother] Catharine Margaret Powlett Countess Darlington.

On 18th January 1864 Henry Vane 2nd Duke Cleveland (age 76) died at the parish of St George's Church, Hanover Square.
