Biography of Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet 1586-1666

On or before 30th November 1586 Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet was born to Thomas Garrard of St Benet, Gracechurch. He was baptised on 30th November 1586 at St Benet Gracechurch [Map].

In or before 1622 Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet (age 35) and Mary Jennings Lady Garrard were married.

On or before 25th April 1627 [his son] Thomas Garrard 2nd Baronet was born to Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet (age 40) and [his wife] Mary Jennings Lady Garrard. He was baptised on 25th April 1627 at St Benet Gracechurch [Map].

On or before 13th December 1632 [his father] Thomas Garrard of St Benet, Gracechurch died. He was buried on 13th December 1632 at St Benet Gracechurch [Map].

Before 1637 Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet (age 50) joined the Worshipful Company of Salters.

On 7th February 1637 Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet (age 50) was elected Alderman of Bishopsgate [Map].

In 1640 Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet (age 53) was elected Alderman of Candlewick Ward until he was discharged in 1648 being a Royalist.

On 3rd December 1641 Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet (age 55) was knighted at Hampton Court Palace, Richmond [Map]; one of five Aldermen to be knighted that day.

In 1650 Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet (age 63) was fined for being a delinquent. He was tried but acquitted for want of evidence.

In or before 1658 [his son] Thomas Garrard 2nd Baronet (age 30) and [his daughter-in-law] Sarah Beaumont were married.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On or before 3rd March 1664 [his wife] Mary Jennings Lady Garrard died. She was buried on 3rd March 1664 at St Benet Gracechurch [Map].

In or before 1666 Jacob Garrard 1st Baronet (age 79) died. His son [his son] Thomas (age 38) succeeded 2nd Baronet Garrard of Langford in Norfolk.
