Biography of John Beckett 2nd Baronet 1775-1847

Paternal Family Tree: Beckett

On 3rd March 1774 [his father] John Beckett 1st Baronet (age 30) and [his mother] Mary Wilson (age 25) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Bishop Christopher Wilson (age 60) and [his grandmother] Anne Gibson (age 47).

On 17th May 1775 John Beckett 2nd Baronet was born to John Beckett 1st Baronet (age 32) and Mary Wilson Lady Beckett (age 26). Educated at Leeds Grammar School, Trinity College, Cambridge (matriculated 1791; BA 1795; MA 1798), Inner Temple (admitted 1795; bencher, 1840) and Middle Temple (admitted 1799; called 1803). Barrister-at-law on the Northern Circuit. Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, 1797-1816.

In 1806 John Beckett 2nd Baronet (age 30) was appointed Under-Secretary for Home Affairs which office he held until 1817.

In 1817 John Beckett 2nd Baronet (age 41) was sworn to the Privy Council and appointed Judge Advocate-General which office he held until 1827.

On 20th January 1817 John Beckett 2nd Baronet (age 41) and Anne Lowther Lady Beckett were married. She the daughter of William Lowther 1st Earl Lonsdale (age 59) and Augusta Fane Countess Lonsdale (age 55).

In 1818 John Beckett 2nd Baronet (age 42) was elected MP Cockermouth which seat he held until 1821.

In 1823 [his mother] Mary Wilson Lady Beckett (age 74) died.

In 1826 [his father] John Beckett 1st Baronet (age 82) died. His son John (age 50) succeeded 2nd Baronet Beckett of Leeds. [his wife] Anne Lowther Lady Beckett by marriage Lady Beckett of Leeds.

In 1826 John Beckett 2nd Baronet (age 50) was elected MP Haslemere which seat he held until 1832.

In 1832 John Beckett 2nd Baronet (age 56) purchased New Grange, Headingley which he renamed Kirkstall Grange.

In 1835 John Beckett 2nd Baronet (age 59) was elected MP Leeds which seat he held until 1837.

On 19th March 1844 [his father-in-law] William Lowther 1st Earl Lonsdale (age 86) died at York House Twickenham, Richmond. On 19th March 1844 His son [his brother-in-law] William (age 56) succeeded 2nd Earl Lonsdale, 3rd Viscount Lowther, 3rd Baron Lowther.

On 31st May 1847 John Beckett 2nd Baronet (age 72) died at Brighton. He was buried at All Saints Church, Fulham. His brother [his brother] Thomas (age 68) succeeded 3rd Baronet Beckett of Leeds.

On 8th November 1863 [his former wife] Anne Lowther Lady Beckett died.
