Biography of John Evelyn of Wiltshire 1601-1685

Paternal Family Tree: Evelyn

John Evelyn of Wiltshire and Elizabeth Coxe were married.

On 11th August 1601 John Evelyn of Wiltshire was born to George Evelyn of West Dean (age 19).

In 1642 [his daughter] Sarah Evelyn Viscountess Fanshawe and Castleton was born to John Evelyn of Wiltshire (age 40) and Elizabeth Coxe.

John Evelyn's Diary. 2nd July 1649. I went from Wotton, Surrey [Map] to Godstone, Surrey (the residence of [his uncle] Sir John Evelyn (age 58)), where was also Sir John Evelyn of Wilts. (age 47), when I took leave of both Sir Johns and their ladies. Mem. the prodigious memory of Sir John of Wilts' [his daughter] daughter, since married to Mr. W. Pierrepont [Note. Mr R Pierrepoint], and mother of the present [his grandson] Earl of Kingston. I returned to Sayes Court, Deptford [Map] this night.

Before 26th September 1662 [his son-in-law] John Wray 3rd Baronet (age 43) and [his daughter] Sarah Evelyn Viscountess Fanshawe and Castleton (age 20) were married. She by marriage Lady Wray of Glentworth in Lincolnshire. The difference in their ages was 22 years.

In 1664 [his father] George Evelyn of West Dean (age 82) died.

Around 1665 [his son-in-law] Thomas Fanshawe 2nd Viscount Fanshawe (age 33) and [his daughter] Sarah Evelyn Viscountess Fanshawe and Castleton (age 23) were married.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

After 1674 [his son-in-law] George Saunderson 5th Viscount Castleton (age 42) and [his daughter] Sarah Evelyn Viscountess Fanshawe and Castleton (age 32) were married. His second wife, her third husband. She by marriage Viscountess Castleton.

On 26th June 1685 John Evelyn of Wiltshire (age 83) died. He left his daughter [his daughter] Sarah Evelyn Viscountess Fanshawe and Castleton (age 43) only five shillings in his will since he disapproved of her marriage with [his son-in-law] George Saunderson 5th Viscount Castleton (age 53).

John Evelyn's Diary. 6th June 1687. I visited my [his daughter] Lady Pierpoint, daughter to Sir John Evelyn, of Deane [in Wilts], now widow of Mr. Pierpoint, and mother of the [his grandson] Earl of Kingston. She was now engaged in the marriage of my cousin, [his grandson] Evelyn Pierpoint (age 32), her second son.

John Evelyn's Diary. 1st January 1699. My cousin [his daughter] Pierrepoint died. She was daughter to Sir John Evelyn, of Wilts, my father's nephew; she was widow to William Pierrepoint, brother to the Marquis of Dorchester, and mother to [his grandson] Evelyn Pierrepoint, Earl of Kingston (age 44); a most excellent and prudent lady.

[his daughter] Elizabeth Evelyn was born to John Evelyn of Wiltshire and Elizabeth Coxe.
