Biography of John Russell 6th Duke Bedford 1766-1839

On 8th June 1764 [his father] Francis Russell [aged 24] and [his mother] Elizabeth Keppel [aged 25] were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] William Anne Keppel 2nd Earl Albermarle and [his grandmother] Anne Lennox Countess Albermarle [aged 60]. He the son of John Russell 4th Duke Bedford [aged 53] and Gertrude Leveson-Gower Duchess Bedford. They were fifth cousin once removed. She a great granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 6th July 1766 John Russell 6th Duke Bedford was born to [his father] Francis Russell [aged 26] and [his mother] Elizabeth Keppel [aged 27]. He a great x 2 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 22nd March 1767 [his father] Francis Russell [aged 27] died from a fall from a horse while out hunting.

In 1768 [his mother] Elizabeth Keppel [aged 29] died.

On 5th January 1771 [his grandfather] John Russell 4th Duke Bedford [aged 60] died at Woburn, Bedfordshire. He was buried at Bedford Chapel, St Michael's Church, Chenies. His grandson [his brother] Francis [aged 5] succeeded 5th Duke Bedford, 5th Marquess Tavistock, 9th Earl Bedford, 9th Baron Russell of Cheneys, 7th Baron Russell of Thornhaugh, 5th Baron Howland of Streatham.

In 1786 John Russell 6th Duke Bedford [aged 19] and Georgiana Elizabeth Byng [aged 18] were married. They were fifth cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 13th May 1788 [his son] Francis Russell 7th Duke Bedford was born to John Russell 6th Duke Bedford [aged 21] and [his wife] Georgiana Elizabeth Byng [aged 20]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married before 1st July 1809 his half fourth cousin Anna Maria Stanhope Duchess Bedford, daughter of Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington, and had issue.

On 29th May 1788 Orlando Bridgeman 1st Earl Bradford [aged 26] and [his sister-in-law] Lucy Elizabeth Byng Countess Bradford [aged 21] were married.

On 8th May 1790 [his son] George Russell was born to John Russell 6th Duke Bedford [aged 23] and [his wife] Georgiana Elizabeth Byng [aged 22]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married before 16th October 1819 Elizabeth Anne Rawdon and had issue.

On 18th August 1792 [his son] John Russell 1st Earl Russell was born to John Russell 6th Duke Bedford [aged 26] and [his wife] Georgiana Elizabeth Byng [aged 24]. He married (1) 11th April 1835 Adelaide Lister and had issue (2) 20th July 1841 Frances Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound Countess Russell, daughter of Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound 2nd Earl Minto and Mary Brydone Countess Minto, and had issue.

On 14th April 1794 Thomas Thynne 2nd Marquess of Bath [aged 29] and [his sister-in-law] Isabella Elizabeth Byng Marchioness Bath [aged 20] were married. He the son of Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 59] and Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 58]. They were fifth cousins.

On 19th November 1796 Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath [aged 62] died. His son Thomas [aged 31] succeeded 2nd Marquess of Bath, 4th Viscount Weymouth, 4th Baron Thynne of Warminster in Wiltshire, 5th Baronet Thynne of Kempsford in Gloucestershire. On 11th October 1801 [his wife] Georgiana Elizabeth Byng [aged 33] died.

On 2nd March 1802 Francis Russell 5th Duke Bedford [aged 36] died unmarried at Woburn, Bedfordshire. He was buried at Bedford Chapel, St Michael's Church, Chenies. His brother John [aged 35] succeeded 6th Duke Bedford, 6th Marquess Tavistock, 10th Earl Bedford, 10th Baron Russell of Cheneys, 8th Baron Russell of Thornhaugh, 6th Baron Howland of Streatham.

On 23rd June 1803 John Russell 6th Duke Bedford [aged 36] and Georgiana Gordon Duchess Bedford [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Duchess Bedford. She the daughter of Alexander Gordon 4th Duke Gordon [aged 60] and Jane Maxwell Duchess Gordon [aged 55]. They were sixth cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 11th May 1804 [his son] Wriothesley Russell was born to John Russell 6th Duke Bedford [aged 37] and [his wife] Georgiana Gordon Duchess Bedford [aged 22]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married 23rd June 1829 his first cousin Elizabeth Laura Henrietta Russell.

On 24th April 1805 [his son] Edward Russell was born to John Russell 6th Duke Bedford [aged 38] and [his wife] Georgiana Gordon Duchess Bedford [aged 23]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 5th October 1805 Charles Cornwallis 1st Marquess Cornwallis [aged 66] died at Gauspur, Ghazipur. His son Charles [aged 30] succeeded 2nd Marquess Cornwallis, 3rd Earl Cornwallis, 7th Baron Cornwallis. The Duke of Bedford [aged 39], who embarked at Holyhead on Tuesday Night the 25th Instant, on board His Majesty's Yacht the Dorset, arrived in this Harbour early this Morning. His Grace on his Arrival in Dublin, was received by the Lord Mayor, Aldermen, Sheriffs, and Commons of the City of Dublin.

His Grace, attended by a Squadron of Dragoons, proceeded to the Castle, and the Council having assembled at Three o'Clock, His Grace was introduced in form to His Excellency the Earl, of Hardwicke [aged 48], who received him sitting under the Canopy of State in the Presence Chamber, from whence a Procession was made in the usual State to the Council Chamber: The Council sitting, His Grace's Commission was tead, and the Oath being administered to him, His Grace was invested with the Collar of the most illustrious Order of Saint Patrick, and received the Sword of State from the Earl of Hardwicke.

His Grace afterwards repaired to the Presence Chamber, and received the Compliments of the Nobility and other Persons of Distinction upon his safe Arrival, and taKing upon him the Government of Ireland.

On 29th December 1806 Charles Lennox 3rd Duke Richmond [aged 71] died at Goodwood West Sussex. He was buried at Chichester Cathedral [Map]. His nephew Charles [aged 42] succeeded 4th Duke Richmond, 4th Earl March, 4th Baron Settrington. [his sister-in-law] Charlotte Gordon Duchess Richmond [aged 38] by marriage Duchess Richmond.

Before 1st July 1809 Francis Russell 7th Duke Bedford [aged 21] and Anna Maria Stanhope Duchess Bedford [aged 25] were married. She married 1832 James Hamilton 1st Duke of Abercorn, son of James Hamilton and Harriet Douglas Countess Aberdeen, and had issue.

On 11th December 1813 [his brother-in-law] George Gordon 5th Duke Gordon [aged 43] and Elizabeth Brodie Duchess Gordon [aged 19] were married. She brought £100,000 to the marriage and inherited more then £100,000 when her father died. The difference in their ages was 24 years. On 26th August 1828 [his sister-in-law] Susan Gordon Duchess Manchester died.

On 23rd June 1829 Wriothesley Russell [aged 25] and Elizabeth Laura Henrietta Russell [aged 26] were married. He the son of John Russell 6th Duke Bedford [aged 62] and Georgiana Gordon Duchess Bedford [aged 47]. They were first cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 28th May 1836 [his brother-in-law] George Gordon 5th Duke Gordon [aged 66] died without legitimate issue at Belgrave Square, Belgravia. Duke Gordon, Baron Mordaunt extinct. His fourth cousin once removed George [aged 74] succeeded 9th Marquess Huntly, 14th Earl Huntley.

On 20th October 1839 John Russell 6th Duke Bedford [aged 73] died. His son Francis [aged 51] succeeded 7th Duke Bedford, 7th Marquess Tavistock, 11th Earl Bedford, 11th Baron Russell of Cheneys, 9th Baron Russell of Thornhaugh, 7th Baron Howland of Streatham. On 24th February 1853 [his former wife] Georgiana Gordon Duchess Bedford [aged 71] died at Nice, France.
