Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

Before 12th September 1606 [his father] Clement Spelman of Narborough and [his mother] Ursula Willoughby (age 13) were married.

On 12th September 1606 John Spelman was born to [his father] Clement Spelman of Narborough and [his mother] Ursula Willoughby (age 13).

On 24th September 1607 [his father] Clement Spelman of Narborough died. In 1647 [his mother] Ursula Willoughby (age 14) died. They were buried at All Saints Church, Narborough [Map]. Elbow Reclining Figure. Stuart Hooded Monument. Possibly Cornelius Cure.

Clement Spelman of Narborough: he was born to John Spelman of and Margaret Blennerhasset. The mother assumed based on his father having married Margaret but not certain she is his only wife. In 1602 Clement Spelman of Narborough and Anne Carvill were married. Before 12th September 1606 Clement Spelman of Narborough and Ursula Willoughby were married.

Ursula Willoughby: Around 1593 she was born to John Willoughby of Risley.

Before 1st August 1640 John Spelman (age 33) and Anne Heveningham were married.

On 1st August 1640 [his son] Mundeford Spelman was born to John Spelman (age 33) and [his wife] Anne Heveningham. He married before 28th September 1691 Anna Walpole.

Long Parliament

In 1645 John Spelman (age 38) was elected MP Castle Rising in the Long Parliament.

Pride's Purge

On 6th January 1649 Thomas Pride, on behalf of Thomas Fairfax 3rd Lord Fairfax (age 36) and Henry Ireton (age 38), supported by two regiments, and Nathaniel Rich's (age 24) Regiment of Horse, with Thomas Grey (age 26), prevented MPs opposed to the trial of King Charles I (age 48) from entering Parliament including...

In 1660 John Spelman (age 53) was elected MP Castle Rising in the Convention Parliament.

Anne Heveningham: she was born to John Heveningham of Ketteringham and Alice Shelton. Before 1st August 1640 John Spelman and she were married.
