Biography of Reverend Edward Royds 1790-1836

Paternal Family Tree: Royds

On 23rd December 1784 [his father] James Royds of Falinge (age 26) and [his mother] Mary Smith (age 17) were married at St Mary's Church, Rochdale [Note. Assumed to be the Parish Church of Rochdale.]

On 23rd August 1790 Reverend Edward Royds was born to James Royds of Falinge (age 32) and Mary Smith (age 23).

On 7th October 1790 Reverend Edward Royds was baptised at St Mary's Church, Rochdale.

On 21st July 1816 [his mother] Mary Smith (age 49) died.

In 1819 Reverend Edward Royds (age 28) was appointed Rector of St Oswald's Church, Brereton [Map] which office he held until his death in 1836. The first of four Rectors of St Oswald's Church, Brereton [Map] from the Royds family. This Edward, his brother [his brother] Reverend Charles Smith Royds (age 19), Edward's son [his son] Reverend Edward Royds, and his son [his grandson] Reverend Alfred Royds.

On or after 28th December 1819, the date of the licence, Reverend Edward Royds (age 29) and Mary Molyneux (age 26) were married.

In 1820 Reverend Edward Royds (age 29) was awarded BA by Christ's College, Cambridge University [Map].

On 28th December 1820 [his son] Reverend Edward Royds was born to Reverend Edward Royds (age 30) and [his wife] Mary Molyneux (age 27).

In 1822 Reverend Edward Royds (age 31) was appointed Rector of St Giles' Church, Haughton [Map].

On 8th April 1822 [his son] Clement Royds was born to Reverend Edward Royds (age 31) and [his wife] Mary Molyneux (age 29). He was a twin with his brother [his son] Henry Royds of Elm House in Wavertree.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 12th March 1824 [his son] Thomas Molyneux Royds was born to Reverend Edward Royds (age 33) and [his wife] Mary Molyneux (age 31). He was baptised at St Oswald's Church, Brereton [Map] on 17th June 1824.

On 24th October 1825 [his son] Reverend Francis Coulman Royds was born to Reverend Edward Royds (age 35) and [his wife] Mary Molyneux (age 32).

In 1831 Reverend Edward Royds (age 40) resigned as Rector of St Giles' Church, Haughton [Map] in favour of his brother [his brother] Reverend Charles Smith Royds (age 31).

On 6th February 1834 [his daughter] Emily Smyth Royds was born to Reverend Edward Royds (age 43) and [his wife] Mary Molyneux (age 40).

On 11th April 1836 Reverend Edward Royds (age 45) died. On 14th April 1836 he was buried in the Chancel of St Oswald's Church, Brereton [Map]

On 4th December 1859 [his former wife] Mary Molyneux (age 66) died at Elkington Rectory. She was buried in the Chancel of St Oswald's Church, Brereton [Map] on 8th December 1859 where she has a memorial window in the south transept.
