Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 2nd April 1673 [his father] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater (age 26) and [his mother] Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater (age 17) were married at St Dionis Backchurch. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Charles Paulet 1st Duke Bolton (age 43) and [his grandmother] Mary Scrope 6th Marchioness Winchester. On 19th March 1701 [his father] John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater (age 54) died. He was buried in the Bridgewater Chapel, St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden. His son Scroop (age 19) succeeded 4th Earl Bridgewater, 5th Viscount Brackley, 5th Baron Ellesmere.

1702 Capture of Venlo, Roermond, Stevensweert and Liège

John Evelyn's Diary. 1st December 1702. After the excess of honor conferred by the Queen (age 37) on the [his future father-in-law] Earl of Marlborough (age 52), by making him a Knight of the Garter and a Duke, for the success of but one campaign, that he should desire £5,000 a year to be settled on him by Parliament out of the Post Office, was thought a bold and unadvised request, as he had, besides his own considerable estate, above £30,000 a year in places and employments, with £50,000 at interest. He had married one [his future sister-in-law] daughter (age 21) to the son (age 24) of my Lord Treasurer Godolphin (age 57), [his future sister-in-law] another (age 19) to the Earl of Sunderland (age 27), and a [his future wife] third (age 15) to the Earl of Bridgewater (age 21). He is a very handsome person, well-spoken and affable, and supports his want of acquired knowledge by keeping good company.

In 1703 [his brother-in-law] William Byron 4th Baron Byron (age 32) and [his sister] Mary Egerton Baroness Byron (age 26) were married. She by marriage Baroness Byron of Rochdale in Lancashire. She the daughter of John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough (age 52) and Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough (age 42). William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

In 1705 John Montagu 2nd Duke Montagu (age 15) and [his sister-in-law] Mary Churchill Duchess of Montagu (age 15) were married. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough (age 54) and [his mother-in-law] Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough (age 44). He the son of Ralph Montagu 1st Duke Montagu (age 66) and Elizabeth Wriothesley Countess Northumberland. They were third cousins.

On 9th March 1709 Ralph Montagu 1st Duke Montagu (age 70) died. He was buried at Westminster Abbey [Map]. His son John (age 19) succeeded 2nd Duke Montagu, 4th Baron Montagu of Boughton in Northamptonshire. [his sister-in-law] Mary Churchill Duchess of Montagu (age 19) by marriage Duchess Montagu.

On 15th September 1712 Sidney Godolphin 1st Earl Godolphin (age 67) died. His son Francis (age 34) succeeded 2nd Earl Godolphin, 2nd Viscount Rialton, 2nd Baron Godolphin of Rialton in Cornwall. [his sister-in-law] Henrietta Churchill 2nd Duchess of Marlborough (age 31) by marriage Countess Godolphin.

On 22nd March 1714 [his wife] Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater (age 27) died. She was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden on 29th March 1714.

On 23rd May 1716 [his mother] Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater (age 60) died. She was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden on 30th May 1716.

On 30th January 1719 [his son] John Egerton (age 14) died of smallpox at Eton College [Map]. He was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden on 5th February 1719.

Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

The difference in their ages was 25 years. She the daughter of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford (age 40). He the son of John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater. They were fifth cousin once removed.

In 1723 [his brother] Bishop Henry Egerton (age 33) was appointed Bishop of Hereford.

On 30th April 1723 [his daughter] Louisa Egerton Countess Gower was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 41) and [his wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 16). She married 1748 her fifth cousin Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford, son of John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower and Evelyn Pierrepont Baroness Gower, and had issue.

After January 1724 William Capell 3rd Earl Essex (age 26) and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Russell Countess Essex (age 13) were married. She by marriage Countess Essex. She the daughter of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and [his mother-in-law] Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford (age 42). He the son of Algernon Capell 2nd Earl Essex and Mary Bentinck Countess Essex (age 44). They were fourth cousins.

On 22nd April 1725 [his son-in-law] Wriothesley Russell 3rd Duke Bedford (age 16) and [his daughter] Anne Egerton Duchess Bedford were married. She by marriage Duchess Bedford. She was the step-daughter of his sister [his wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 18). She the daughter of Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 43) and [his former wife] Elizabeth Churchill Countess Bridgewater. He the son of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and [his mother-in-law] Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford. They were sixth cousins.

On 27th July 1725 [his son] Charles Egerton was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater (age 43) and [his wife] Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 18). He died aged five in 1731.

The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

She married 9th March 1753 Frederick Calvert 6th Baron Baltimore, son of Charles Calvert 5th Baron Baltimore and Mary Janssen Baroness Baltimore.

On 2nd May 1731 [his son] Charles Egerton (age 5) died.

On 11th October 1731 [his brother-in-law] John Russell 4th Duke Bedford (age 21) and Diana Spencer Duchess Bedford (age 21) were married. She the daughter of Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland and [his former sister-in-law] Anne Churchill Countess Sunderland. He the son of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and [his mother-in-law] Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford. They were third cousins.

On 23rd October 1732 [his son-in-law] Wriothesley Russell 3rd Duke Bedford (age 24) died at A Coruña. He was buried at Bedford Chapel, St Michael's Church, Chenies. The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. The narrative combines earlier historical sources with firsthand information and oral testimony to present an authoritative account of Normandy’s transformation from a Viking settlement into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful realms. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact.
