Biography of Thomas Agar-Robartes 1880-1915

Paternal Family Tree: Agar

In 1878 [his father] Thomas Agar-Robartes 6th Viscount Clifden (age 33) and [his mother] Mary Dickinson Viscountess Clifden were married. They had ten children, of whom one died in infancy.

On 22nd May 1880 Thomas Agar-Robartes was born to Thomas Agar-Robartes 6th Viscount Clifden (age 36) and Mary Dickinson Viscountess Clifden.

Royal 1st Devon, The Honourable Thomas Charles Reginald Agar-Robartes (age 22) to be Second Lieutenant. Dated 4th June, 1902.

In January 1906 Thomas Agar-Robartes (age 25) was elected MP Bodmin but lost his seat in June 1906 following an election petition.

In 1908 Thomas Agar-Robartes (age 27) was elected MP St Austell which seat he held until his death in 1915.

In 1914 Thomas Agar-Robartes (age 33) joined the Royal Bucks Hussars as an officer. Tommy then joined the Coldstream Guards and was subsequently posted to France & Flanders. Captain The Honourable Thomas Charles Reginald Agar-Robartes, in command of No. 2 Coy, 1st Bn, the Coldstream Guards.

Battle of Loos

On 28th September 1915 Thomas Agar-Robartes (age 35) was wounded in the Battle of Loos.

On 30th September 1915 Thomas Agar-Robartes (age 35) was killed by a sniper during the Battle of Loos after rescuing a wounded comrade under heavy fire for which he was recommended for the Victoria Cross. He was buried at Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, near Béthune. He is commemorated by a memorial in Truro Cathedral and in stained glass at Selsey Abbey [Map], St Andrew's Church, Wimpole [Map] and Church Norton.
