The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Biography of Thomas Peyton 2nd Baronet 1613-1684

On 18th August 1613 Thomas Peyton 2nd Baronet was born to Samuel Peyton 1st Baronet (age 22).

On 23rd September 1623 [his father] Samuel Peyton 1st Baronet (age 32) died. His son Thomas (age 10) succeeded 2nd Baronet Peyton of Knowlton in Kent.

In November 1640 Thomas Peyton 2nd Baronet (age 27) was elected MP Sandwich.

Before 7th August 1655 Thomas Peyton 2nd Baronet (age 41) was imprisoned in the Tower of London [Map] for being a Royalist.

In 1661 Thomas Peyton 2nd Baronet (age 47) was elected MP Kent which seat he held until 1679.

Before 1665 [his son-in-law] Basil Dixwell 1st Baronet (age 24) and [his daughter] Dorothy Peyton were married.

On 11th February 1684 Thomas Peyton 2nd Baronet (age 70) died. Baronet Peyton of Knowlton in Kent extinct. He left four daughters, who sold Knowlton Court to Admiral Sir John Narborough.
