Biography of William Henry Edgecumbe 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe 1833-1917

On 5th November 1833 William Henry Edgecumbe 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe was born to [his father] Ernest Augustus Edgecumbe 3rd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 36).

On 26th September 1839 [his grandfather] Richard Edgecumbe 2nd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 75) died. His son [his father] Ernest (age 42) succeeded 3rd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, 4th Baron Edgcumbe.

On 26th October 1858 William Henry Edgecumbe 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 24) and Katherine Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Mount Edgcumbe (age 18) were married. She the daughter of James Hamilton 1st Duke of Abercorn (age 47) and Louisa Jane Russell Duchess Abercorn (age 46). He the son of Ernest Augustus Edgecumbe 3rd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 61).

In 1859 [his daughter] Victoria Frederica Edgcumbe was born to William Henry Edgecumbe 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 25) and [his wife] Katherine Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Mount Edgcumbe (age 19). She married 3rd August 1880 her fifth cousin once removed Algernon Percy, son of Algernon George Percy 6th Duke Northumberland and Louisa Drummond Duchess Northumberland, and had issue.

On 22nd November 1859 William Scott 6th Duke Buccleuch 8th Duke Queensberry (age 28) and [his sister-in-law] Louisa Jane Hamilton Duchess Buccleuch and Queensbury (age 23) were married. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] James Hamilton 1st Duke of Abercorn (age 48) and [his mother-in-law] Louisa Jane Russell Duchess Abercorn (age 47). He the son of Walter Scott 5th Duke Buccleuch 7th Duke Queensberry and Charlotte Anne Thynne Duchess Buccleuch Duchess Queensbury (age 48). They were fifth cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

In 1861 [his daughter] Alberta Louise Edgcumbe Baroness Roborough was born to William Henry Edgecumbe 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 27) and [his wife] Katherine Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Mount Edgcumbe (age 21). She married 1891 Henry Lopes 1st Baron Roborough, son of Massey Lopes 3rd Baronet, and had issue.

On 3rd September 1861 [his father] Ernest Augustus Edgecumbe 3rd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 64) died. His son William (age 27) succeeded 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, 5th Baron Edgcumbe. [his wife] Katherine Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Mount Edgcumbe (age 21) by marriage Countess of Mount Edgcumbe.

The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. The narrative combines earlier historical sources with firsthand information and oral testimony to present an authoritative account of Normandy’s transformation from a Viking settlement into one of medieval Europe’s most powerful realms. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact. Today this classic work remains a foundational source for understanding Norman identity, medieval statesmanship, and the historical forces that reshaped England and Western Europe between 800AD and 1100AD.

She married 1892 her sixth cousin John Townshend St Aubyn 2nd Baron St Levan, son of John St Aubyn 1st Baron St Levan and Elizabeth Clementina Townshend Baroness St Levan, and had issue.

In 1865 [his son] Piers Edgcumbe 5th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe was born to William Henry Edgecumbe 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 31) and [his wife] Katherine Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Mount Edgcumbe (age 25). He married 1911 his fourth cousin once removed Edith Villiers Countess Mount Edgecumbe, daughter of Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon and Caroline Elizabeth Agar Countess Clarendon.

In 1869 Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice 5th Marquess Lansdowne (age 23) and [his sister-in-law] Maud Evelyn Hamilton Marchioness Lansdowne (age 19) were married. She by marriage Marchioness Lansdowne. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] James Hamilton 1st Duke of Abercorn (age 57) and [his mother-in-law] Louisa Jane Russell Duchess Abercorn (age 56). He the son of Henry Thomas Petty-Fitzmaurice 4th Marquess Lansdowne and Emily Jane de Flahaut Marchioness Lansdowne (age 49). They were fourth cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

In 1869 [his brother-in-law] James Hamilton 2nd Duke of Abercorn (age 30) and Mary Anna Curzon Howe Duchess Abercorn (age 21) were married. She by marriage Duchess Abercorn. She the daughter of Richard William Penn Curzon Howe 1st Earl Howe (age 72) and Anne Gore Countess Howe. He the son of [his father-in-law] James Hamilton 1st Duke of Abercorn (age 57) and [his mother-in-law] Louisa Jane Russell Duchess Abercorn (age 56).

In 1869 George Charles Spencer-Churchill 8th Duke of Marlborough (age 24) and [his sister-in-law] Albertha Frances Anne Hamilton Duchess of Marlborough (age 22) were married. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] James Hamilton 1st Duke of Abercorn (age 57) and [his mother-in-law] Louisa Jane Russell Duchess Abercorn (age 56). He the son of John Winston Spencer-Churchill 7th Duke of Marlborough (age 46) and Frances Anne Emily Vane Duchess of Marlborough (age 46). They were third cousin once removed. Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

On 21st April 1906 William Henry Edgecumbe 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 72) and Caroline Cecelia Edgecumbe Countess Revensworth and Mount Edgecumbe (age 67) were married. She by marriage Countess of Mount Edgcumbe. He the son of Ernest Augustus Edgecumbe 3rd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. They were first cousins.

On 23rd February 1909 [his wife] Caroline Cecelia Edgecumbe Countess Revensworth and Mount Edgecumbe (age 70) died.

In 1911 [his son] Piers Edgcumbe 5th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe (age 46) and [his daughter-in-law] Edith Villiers Countess Mount Edgecumbe (age 33) were married. There was no issue from the marriage. She the daughter of Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon (age 64) and Caroline Elizabeth Agar Countess Clarendon. The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.
