The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

Biography of William Howard 1714-1756

On 23rd December 1714 William Howard was born to [his father] Henry Bowes Howard 4th Earl Berkshire 11th Earl Suffolk (age 28) and [his mother] Catherine Graham Countess Berkshire and Suffolk. Coefficient of inbreeding 6.26%.

Around 1726 William Howard (age 11) educated at Eton College [Map].

On 6th November 1736 William Howard (age 21) and Mary Finch (age 20) were married. She the daughter of Heneage Finch 2nd Earl Aylesford (age 53) and Mary Fisher Countess Aylesford (age 46). He the son of Henry Bowes Howard 4th Earl Berkshire 11th Earl Suffolk (age 50) and Catherine Graham Countess Berkshire and Suffolk.

In 1737 William Howard (age 22) was elected MP Castle Rising which seat he held until 1747.

On 10th May 1739 [his son] Henry Howard 12th Earl Suffolk 5th Earl Berkshire was born to William Howard (age 24) and [his wife] Mary Finch (age 23). He married 14th August 1777 his first cousin Charlotte Finch Countess Suffolk and Berkshire, daughter of Heneage Finch 3rd Earl Aylesford and Charlotte Seymour Countess Aylesford, and had issue.

On 2nd April 1741 William Courtenay 7th Earl Devon (age 32) and [his sister-in-law] Frances Finch Countess Devon were married. She by marriage Countess Devon. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] Heneage Finch 2nd Earl Aylesford (age 58) and [his mother-in-law] Mary Fisher Countess Aylesford. He the son of William Courtenay 6th Earl Devon and Anne Bertie Countess Devon.

On 22nd April 1745 Henry Howard 10th Earl Suffolk (age 38) died. His third cousin [his father] Henry (age 59) succeeded 11th Earl Suffolk.

In 1750 [his brother-in-law] Heneage Finch 3rd Earl Aylesford (age 34) and Charlotte Seymour Countess Aylesford (age 19) were married. She was reputed to be worth £50,000. She the daughter of Charles Seymour 6th Duke of Somerset and Charlotte Finch Duchess Somerset (age 57). He the son of [his father-in-law] Heneage Finch 2nd Earl Aylesford (age 67) and [his mother-in-law] Mary Fisher Countess Aylesford. They were second cousins.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 7th March 1779 [his son] Henry Howard 12th Earl Suffolk 5th Earl Berkshire (age 39) died at Bath, Somerset [Map]. He was buried at All Saints Church, Charlton-All-Saints [Map]. On 8th August 1779 his postumous son His son [his grandson] Henry succeeded 13th Earl Suffolk, 6th Earl Berkshire, 6th Viscount Andover in Hampshire, 6th Baron Howard of Charlton in Wiltshire although he died two days later.

Before 16th March 1803 [his former wife] Mary Finch (age 87) died. On 16th March 1803 she was buried.

On 15th July 1756 William Howard (age 41) was killed accidentally whilst driving a chaise.

Mary Finch: On 1st March 1716 she was born to Heneage Finch 2nd Earl Aylesford and Mary Fisher Countess Aylesford. On 6th November 1736 William Howard and she were married. She the daughter of Heneage Finch 2nd Earl Aylesford and Mary Fisher Countess Aylesford. He the son of Henry Bowes Howard 4th Earl Berkshire 11th Earl Suffolk and Catherine Graham Countess Berkshire and Suffolk.

[his daughter] Frances Howard was born to William Howard. She married 25th February 1783 Richard Bagot aka Howard, son of Walter Wagstaffe Bagot 5th Baronet and Barbara Legge Baroness Bagot, and had issue.
