Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

Biography of William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley 1575-1622

Paternal Family Tree: Parker

Before 1575 [his father] Edward Parker 13th Baron Marshal 12th Baron Morley [aged 24] and [his mother] Elizabeth Stanley Baroness Marshal Morley [aged 16] were married. They were third cousin once removed.

In 1575 William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley was born to [his father] Edward Parker 13th Baron Marshal 12th Baron Morley [aged 25] and [his mother] Elizabeth Stanley Baroness Marshal Morley [aged 16].

On 22nd October 1577 [his grandfather] Henry Parker 12th Baron Marshal 11th Baron Morley [aged 44] died in Madrid [Map]. His son [his father] Edward [aged 27] succeeded 13th Baron Marshal, 12th Baron Morley. [his mother] Elizabeth Stanley Baroness Marshal Morley [aged 19] by marriage Baroness Marshal, Baroness Morley.

On 10th November 1581 [his grandfather] William Stanley 3rd Baron Monteagle [aged 53] died. His grandson William [aged 6] succeeded 4th Baron Monteagle.

On 12th June 1585 [his mother] Elizabeth Stanley Baroness Marshal Morley [aged 27] died.

Before 6th January 1593 William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley [aged 18] and Elizabeth Tresham were married. He by marriage Baron Monteagle. They were fifth cousins.

Around 1597 [his daughter] Catherine Parker was born to William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley [aged 22] and [his wife] Elizabeth Tresham. She married before 1626 John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers, son of Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage and Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers, and had issue.

Around 1597 [his daughter] Elizabeth Parker was born to William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley [aged 22] and [his wife] Elizabeth Tresham. She married Edward Cranfield and had issue.

Around 1600 [his son] Henry Parker 15th Baron Marshal 14th Baron Morley 5th Baron Monteagle was born to William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley [aged 25] and [his wife] Elizabeth Tresham.

Gunpowder Plot

On 26th October 1605 William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley [aged 30] received a letter warning of the Gunpowder Plot and showed it to Robert Cecil 1st Earl Salisbury [aged 42] who then showed it to the King at Hoxton.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 4th November 1605 William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley [aged 30] searched the basement with Thomas Howard 1st Earl Suffolk [aged 44] and discovered the gunpowder and explosives at Westminster Palace [Map].

After 4th November 1605 William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley [aged 30] rewarded with 500 pounds and 200 pounds' worth of lands.

On 1st April 1618 [his father] Edward Parker 13th Baron Marshal 12th Baron Morley [aged 68] died. His son William [aged 43] succeeded 14th Baron Marshal, 13th Baron Morley. Cecily Stanley Baroness Marshal and Morley by marriage Baroness Marshal, Baroness Morley.

On 1st July 1622 William Parker 4th Baron Monteagle 14th Baron Marshal 13th Baron Morley [aged 47] died at Great Hallingbury, Essex. His son Henry [aged 22] succeeded 15th Baron Marshal, 14th Baron Morley, 5th Baron Monteagle.
