Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map]. In loving memory of two brothers Major Chandos Leigh D.S.O. King's Own Scottish Borderers the elder son of the Hon'ble Sir Edward Chandos Leigh K.C. K.C.B. who fought with distinction in the South African War afterwards serving ten years with the Egyptian Army where he was decorated with the orders of the Medjidieh & Osmanieh and the Bahr el Ghazal medal & clasp. He married Winifred daughter of the R t Hon ble A. E. Jeffreys M.P. and died in Flanders aged 40 of wounds received at the battle of Mons 23rd August 1914. Also of his only brother Edward Henry Leigh Lieut 2nd Batt the Rifle Brigade who fell in the attack upon the Auber Ridge 9 th May 1915 aged 26 after being previously mentioned in despatches. Both brothers were educated at Harrow and Cambridge.

Major Chandos Leigh: On 29th August 1873 he was born to Edward Chandos Leigh and Katherine Fanny Rigby.

Lieutenant Edward Henry Leigh: On 14th July 1888 he was born to Edward Chandos Leigh and Katherine Fanny Rigby. In November 1914 Lieutenant Edward Henry Leigh took part in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, his Battalion gaining the distinction of being the first actually to enter and capture that village. On 9th May 1915 Lieutenant Edward Henry Leigh was killed in action in the attack upon the Aubers Ridge, 9 May, 1915; unmarried. Lieutenant Leigh was mentioned in F.M. Sir John (now Lord) French's Despatch of 5 April [London Gazette, 22 June], 1915. His father died three days after being told of his last remaining son's death.

On 22nd January 1669 Alice Leigh 1st Duchess Dudley [aged 91] died in the parish St Giles' in the Fields Church [Map]. She was buried at Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map]. Duke Dudley extinct since it was created for life only.

A large elaborate memorial in black and white marble erected in 1668. Has two recumbent female figures under a canopy supported on eight Ionic columns and on either side an angel with trumpet holding back curtains. Possibly sculpted by William Wright of Charing Cross.

On 6th September 1743 Mary Holbech Baroness Leigh died. She was buried at the Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map].

On or before 9th December 1746, the date she was buried at the Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map], Maria Rebecca Craven died.

On 30th November 1749 Thomas Leigh 4th Baron Leigh [aged 36] died. He was buried at the Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map]. His son Edward [aged 7] succeeded 5th Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire, 6th Baronet Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire

On 4th June 1786 Edward Leigh 5th Baron Leigh [aged 44] died. He was buried at Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map]. Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire, Baronet Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire extinct. The estates of Stoneleigh, Warwickshire [Map] were inherited by his sister Mary Leigh.

On 17th January 1824 William Henry Leigh 2nd Baron Leigh was born to Chandos Leigh 1st Baron Leigh [aged 32] and Margarette Willes Baroness Leigh [aged 25]. He was baptised at St Mary Magdalene's Church, Adlestrop, and for a second time, at Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map] on 10th September 1824. He was educated at Harrow School then Trinity College, Cambridge University [Map]. He married 22nd August 1848 Caroline Amelia Grosvenor Baroness Leigh, daughter of Richard Grosvenor 2nd Marquess Westminster and Elizabeth Mary Leveson-Gower Marchioness Westminster, and had issue.

On 27th September 1850 Chandos Leigh 1st Baron Leigh [aged 59] died. His son William [aged 26] succeeded 2nd Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Caroline Amelia Grosvenor Baroness Leigh [aged 22] by marriage Baroness Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.

Chandos Leigh 1st Baron Leigh: On 27th June 1791 he was born to James Henry Leigh of Adlestrop and Julia Judith Twisleton. Coefficient of inbreeding 1.76%. On 8th June 1819 Chandos Leigh 1st Baron Leigh and Margaret Willes were married. In 1839 Chandos Leigh 1st Baron Leigh was created 1st Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Margarette Willes Baroness Leigh by marriage Baroness Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.

William Henry Leigh 2nd Baron Leigh: On 17th January 1824 he was born to Chandos Leigh 1st Baron Leigh and Margarette Willes Baroness Leigh. He was baptised at St Mary Magdalene's Church, Adlestrop, and for a second time, at Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map] on 10th September 1824. He was educated at Harrow School then Trinity College, Cambridge University [Map]. On 22nd August 1848 William Henry Leigh 2nd Baron Leigh and Caroline Grosvenor were married. They had eight children. She the daughter of Richard Grosvenor 2nd Marquess Westminster and Elizabeth Mary Leveson-Gower Marchioness Westminster.

Caroline Amelia Grosvenor Baroness Leigh: On 14th June 1828 she was born to Richard Grosvenor 2nd Marquess Westminster and Elizabeth Mary Leveson-Gower Marchioness Westminster. She was baptised at St Mary's Church, Eccleston [Map] on 28th July 1828.

Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes

Récits d’un bourgeois de Valenciennes aka The Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes is a vivid 14th-century vernacular chronicle written by an anonymous urban chronicler from Valenciennes in the County of Hainaut. It survives in a manuscript that describes local and regional history from about 1253 to 1366, blending chronology, narrative episodes, and eyewitness-style accounts of political, military, and social events in medieval France, Flanders, and the Low Countries. The work begins with a chronological framework of events affecting Valenciennes and its region under rulers such as King Philip VI of France and the shifting allegiances of local nobility. It includes accounts of conflicts, sieges, diplomatic manoeuvres, and the impact of broader struggles like the Hundred Years’ War on urban life in Hainaut. Written from the perspective of a burgher (bourgeois) rather than a monastery or royal court, the chronicle offers a rare lay viewpoint on high politics and warfare, reflecting how merchants, townspeople, and civic institutions experienced the turbulence of the 13th and 14th centuries. Its narrative style combines straightforward reporting of events with moral and civic observations, making it a valuable source for readers interested in medieval urban society, regional politics, and the lived experience of war and governance in pre-modern Europe.

On 15th September 1884 Gilbert Henry Chandos Leigh [aged 33] died in a hunting accident on a shooting expedition in the Big Horn Mountains Wyoming. Monument in Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map] sculpted by Edwardo Orlandini.

Gilbert Henry Chandos Leigh: On 1st September 1851 he was born to William Henry Leigh 2nd Baron Leigh and Caroline Amelia Grosvenor Baroness Leigh.

On 21st October 1905 William Henry Leigh 2nd Baron Leigh [aged 81] died. His son Francis [aged 50] succeeded 3rd Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Frances Beckwith Baroness Leigh by marriage Baroness Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.

In Loving Memory of William Henry, 2nd Baron Leigh, for Forty-Nine Years Lord Lieutenant of Wancickshire born 17 January 1824, died 21 October 1905 and of Caroline Amelia [aged 77] his wife, daughter of 2nd Marquess of Westminster born 14 June 1828 and died 24 March 1906.

The monument carries the heraldic arms of the family their motto Tout Vient de Dieu (Everything Comes from God) and in an especially lovely design of white and gold lilies around the Cross, are the words: LOVELY AND PLEASANT IN THEIR LIVES IN DEATH THEY WERE NOT DIVIDED

Frances Beckwith Baroness Leigh: On 29th November 1890 and she were married. On 28th April 1909 she died.

On 24th March 1906 Caroline Amelia Grosvenor Baroness Leigh [aged 77] died. Memorial at Church of the Virgin Mary, Stoneleigh [Map].

His nephew Rupert succeeded 4th Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Anne Hicks-Beach by marriage Baroness Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.

John Leigh 5th Baron Leigh: On 11th September 1935 he was born to Rupert Leigh 4th Baron Leigh and Anne Hicks-Beach Baroness Leigh. On 16th September 2003 John Leigh 5th Baron Leigh died. His son Christopher succeeded 6th Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.
