Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

1886. Edmund Beckett 1st Baron Grimthorpe [aged 69] created.

29th April 1905. Nephew Ernest William Beckett 2nd Baron Grimthorpe [aged 48] succeeded.

9th May 1917. Son Ralph Beckett 3rd Baron Grimthorpe [aged 26] succeeded.

1963. Son Christopher Beckett 4th Baron Grimthorpe [aged 47] succeeded.

6th July 2003. Son Edward Beckett 5th Baron Grimthorpe [aged 48] succeeded.

In 1886 Edmund Beckett 1st Baron Grimthorpe [aged 69] was created 1st Baron Grimthorpe. Fanny Catherine Lonsdale Baroness Beckett [aged 62] by marriage Baroness Grimthorpe.

On 29th April 1905 Edmund Beckett 1st Baron Grimthorpe [aged 88] died after a fall. He was buried at St Albans Cathedral [Map]. His nephew Ernest [aged 48] succeeded 2nd Baron Grimthorpe, 6th Baronet Beckett of Leeds.

On 9th May 1917 Ernest William Beckett 2nd Baron Grimthorpe [aged 60] died at a sanatorium in Banchory, Aberdeenshire. His son Ralph [aged 26] succeeded 3rd Baron Grimthorpe, 7th Baronet Beckett of Leeds. Mary Alice Archdale Baroness Beckett by marriage Baroness Grimthorpe. His ashes are interred in the gardens of Villa Cimbrone, Ravello.

In 1963 Ralph Beckett 3rd Baron Grimthorpe [aged 71] died. His son Christopher [aged 47] succeeded 4th Baron Grimthorpe, 8th Baronet Beckett of Leeds. Elizabeth Lumley Baroness Grimthorpe [aged 37] by marriage Baroness Grimthorpe.

On 6th July 2003 Christopher Beckett 4th Baron Grimthorpe [aged 87] died. His son Edward [aged 48] succeeded 5th Baron Grimthorpe, 9th Baronet Beckett of Leeds.

On 14th June 2013 Edward Beckett 5th Baron Grimthorpe [aged 58] and Emma Villers Baroness Grimthorpe [aged 49] were married. She by marriage Baroness Grimthorpe. They were fifth cousin once removed.
