Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

On 20th April 1661 King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 30] created a number of new Baronets and Peers:

William Morice 1st Baronet [aged 33] was created 1st Baronet Morice of Werrington in Devon. Gertrude Bampfylde Lady Morice by marriage Lady Morice of Werrington in Devon.

John Crew 1st Baron Crew [aged 63] was created 1st Baron Crew of Stene in Northamptonshire. Jemima Waldegrave Baroness Crew [aged 59] by marriage Baroness Crew of Stene in Northamptonshire.

Edward Hyde 1st Earl Clarendon [aged 52] was created 1st Earl Clarendon at Westminster Abbey [Map] on the occasion of the Coronation Charles II. Frances Aylesbury Countess Clarendon [aged 43] by marriage Countess Clarendon.

Oliver Fitzwilliam 1st Earl Tyrconnel [aged 51] was created 1st Earl Tyrconnel. Eleanore Holles Countess Tyrconnel by marriage Countess Tyrconnel.

In 1676 William Morice 1st Baronet [aged 48] and Elizabeth Reynell Lady Morice were married. She by marriage Lady Morice of Werrington in Devon.

On or before 7th February 1690 William Morice 1st Baronet [aged 62] died. He was buried at Werrington, Devon on 7th February 1690. His son Nicholas [aged 9] succeeded 2nd Baronet Morice of Werrington in Devon.

On or after 21st March 1704, the date of the licence, Nicholas Morice 2nd Baronet [aged 23] and Catherine Herbert Lady Morice were married at St James' Church, Piccadilly. She by marriage Lady Morice of Werrington in Devon. They has one sons and two daughters. She the daughter of Thomas Herbert 8th Earl Pembroke 5th Earl Montgomery [aged 48] and Margaret Sawyer Countess Pembroke and Montgomery.

On 27th January 1726 Nicholas Morice 2nd Baronet [aged 45] died. He was buried at Werrington, Devon on 7th February 1726 . His son William [aged 19] succeeded 3rd Baronet Morice of Werrington in Devon.

On 8th September 1731 William Morice 3rd Baronet [aged 24] and Lucy Wharton Lady Morice were married. She by marriage Lady Morice of Werrington in Devon. She the daughter of Thomas Wharton 1st Marquess Wharton.

In or before 1741 William Morice 3rd Baronet [aged 33] and Anna Bury Lady Morice were married. She by marriage Lady Morice of Werrington in Devon.

On 24th January 1750 William Morice 3rd Baronet [aged 43] died without issue. Baronet Morice of Werrington in Devon extinct.
