Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

On 18th June 1720 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater [aged 38] was created 1st Duke Bridgewater.

On 4th August 1722 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater [aged 40] and Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater [aged 15] were married. She by marriage Duchess Bridgewater. The difference in their ages was 25 years. She the daughter of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford [aged 40]. He the son of John Egerton 3rd Earl Bridgewater and Jane Paulet Countess Bridgewater. They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 11th January 1744 Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater [aged 62] died. His son John [aged 16] succeeded 2nd Duke Bridgewater, 5th Earl Bridgewater, 6th Viscount Brackley, 6th Baron Ellesmere.

On 26th February 1748 John Egerton 2nd Duke Bridgewater [aged 20] died unmarried. His brother Francis [aged 11] succeeded 3rd Duke Bridgewater, 6th Earl Bridgewater, 7th Viscount Brackley, 7th Baron Ellesmere.

On 8th March 1803 Francis Egerton 3rd Duke Bridgewater [aged 66] died unmarried. Memorial at the Bridgewater Chapel, St Peter and St Paul Church, Little Gaddesden. Duke Bridgewater extinct. His first cousin once removed John [aged 49] succeeded 7th Earl Bridgewater, 8th Viscount Brackley, 8th Baron Ellesmere.

Francis Egerton 3rd Duke Bridgewater: On 21st May 1736 he was born to Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater and Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater. On 26th February 1748 John Egerton 2nd Duke Bridgewater died unmarried. His brother Francis succeeded 3rd Duke Bridgewater, 6th Earl Bridgewater, 7th Viscount Brackley, 7th Baron Ellesmere.

John William Egerton 7th Earl Bridgewater: On 14th April 1753 he was born to Bishop John Egerton and Anne Sophia Grey. Coefficient of inbreeding 6.25%.
