Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

The Queen has been pleased to direct letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal, granting the dignity of a Marquess of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, unto Constantine Henry Earl of Mulgrave [aged 41], and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, stile, and title of Marquess of Normanby, in the county of York. [Maria Liddell Marchioness Normanby [aged 40] by marriage Marchioness Normanby.]

The Queen has also been pleased to direct letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal, granting the dignities of Viscount and Earl of the said United Kingdom, unto William Baron King [aged 33], and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the names, stiles, and titles of Viscount Ockham, of Ockham, in the county of Surrey, and Earl of Lovelace. [Augusta Ada Byron Countess Lovelace [aged 22] by marriage Countess Lovelace. She was a descendant of the previous Baron Lovelace of Hurley in Berkshire.]

The Queen has also been pleased to direct letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal, granting the dignity of an Earl of the said United Kingdom, unto Laurence Baron Dundas [aged 72], and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, stile, and title of Earl of Zetland.

On 28th July 1863 Constantine Phipps 1st Marquess Normanby [aged 66] died. His son George [aged 44] succeeded 2nd Marquess Normanby, 3rd Earl Mulgrave, 3rd Viscount Normanby, 5th Baron Mulgrave of New Ross in Wexford and 3rd Baron Mulgrave. Laura Russell Marchioness Normanby [aged 47] by marriage Marchioness Normanby.

On 3rd April 1890 George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby [aged 70] died at Brighton. His son Constantine [aged 43] succeeded 3rd Marquess Normanby, 4th Earl Mulgrave, 4th Viscount Normanby, 6th Baron Mulgrave of New Ross in Wexford and 4th Baron Mulgrave.

On 30th December 1903 Constantine Phipps 3rd Marquess Normanby [aged 57] and Gertrude Stansfeld Foster Marchioness Normanby were married. She by marriage Marchioness Normanby. He the son of George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby and Laura Russell Marchioness Normanby.

On 25th August 1932 Constantine Phipps 3rd Marquess Normanby [aged 85] died. His son Oswald [aged 20] succeeded 4th Marquess Normanby, 5th Earl Mulgrave, 5th Viscount Normanby, 7th Baron Mulgrave of New Ross in Wexford and 5th Baron Mulgrave.

On 10th February 1951 Oswald Phipps 4th Marquess Normanby [aged 38] and Grania Guinness Marchioness of Normanby [aged 30] were married. She by marriage Marchioness Normanby. He the son of Constantine Phipps 3rd Marquess Normanby and Gertrude Stansfeld Foster Marchioness Normanby.

On 30th January 1994 Oswald Phipps 4th Marquess Normanby [aged 81] died. His son Constantine [aged 39] succeeded 5th Marquess Normanby, 6th Earl Mulgrave, 6th Viscount Normanby, 8th Baron Mulgrave of New Ross in Wexford and 6th Baron Mulgrave.
