Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

11th October 1551, the day before his fourteenth birthday, King Edward VI [aged 13] celebrated at Hampton Court Palace [Map] by rewarding his guardians; it may have been a case of his guardians rewarding themselves.

Henry Grey 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 34] was created 1st Duke Suffolk for having married King Edward VI's first cousin Frances Brandon Duchess of Suffolk [aged 34]. Frances Brandon Duchess of Suffolk by marriage Duchess Suffolk.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. On 5th July 1765 Charles Powlett 5th Duke Bolton [aged 47] committed suicide at Grosvenor Square, Belgravia shooting himself in the head with a pistol. His brother Harry [aged 44] succeeded 6th Duke Bolton, 11th Marquess Winchester, 11th Earl Wiltshire, 11th Baron St John. Katherine Lowther Duchess of Bolton [aged 29] by marriage Duchess Bolton.

On 25th December 1794 Harry Powlett 6th Duke Bolton [aged 74] died without male issue. Duke Bolton extinct. His third cousin once removed George [aged 72] succeeded 12th Marquess Winchester, 12th Earl Wiltshire, 12th Baron St John. Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester. Most of his estates including Bolton Castle [Map] were inherited by his elder brother's illegitimate daughter Jean Mary [aged 43] whose husband Thomas Orde [aged 54] added the surname Powlett to his own.

On 22nd April 1800 George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester [aged 77] died. His son Charles [aged 36] succeeded 13th Marquess Winchester, 13th Earl Wiltshire, 13th Baron St John.

On 31st July 1800 Charles Burroughs-Paulet 13th Marquess Winchester [aged 36] and Anne Andrews Marchioness of Winchester [aged 27] were married. She by marriage Marchioness Winchester. He the son of George Paulett 12th Marquess Winchester and Martha Ingoldsby Marchioness Winchester.

On 29th November 1843 Charles Burroughs-Paulet 13th Marquess Winchester [aged 79] died. His son John [aged 42] succeeded 14th Marquess Winchester, 14th Earl Wiltshire, 14th Baron St John.

On 29th November 1855 John Paulet 14th Marquess Winchester [aged 54] and Mary Robinson Montagu Marchioness Winchester were married. She by marriage Marchioness Winchester. He the son of Charles Burroughs-Paulet 13th Marquess Winchester and Anne Andrews Marchioness of Winchester.

On 4th July 1887 John Paulet 14th Marquess Winchester [aged 86] died. His son Augustus [aged 29] succeeded 15th Marquess Winchester, 15th Earl Wiltshire, 15th Baron St John.

On 11th December 1899 Augustus Paulet 15th Marquess of Winchester [aged 41] was killed in action at Magersfontein, South Africa in a battle where the defending Boer force defeated the advancing British forces. His brother Henry [aged 37] succeeded 16th Marquess Winchester, 16th Earl Wiltshire, 16th Baron St John.

In 1952 Henry Paulet 16th Marquess of Winchester [aged 89] and Bapsybanoo Pavry Marchioness of Winchester [aged 50] were married. She by marriage Marchioness Winchester. The difference in their ages was 39 years. He the son of John Paulet 14th Marquess Winchester and Mary Robinson Montagu Marchioness Winchester.

On 28th June 1962 Henry Paulet 16th Marquess of Winchester [aged 99] died. His first cousin twice removed Richard [aged 57] succeeded 17th Marquess Winchester, 17th Earl Wiltshire, 17th Baron St John.

In 1968 Richard Charles Paulet 17th Marquess of Winchester [aged 63] died unmarried. His first cousin once removed Nigel [aged 26] succeeded 18th Marquess Winchester, 18th Earl Wiltshire, 18th Baron St John.
