The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
On 5th January 1893 Henry St John 5th Viscount Bolingbroke 6th Viscount St John (age 72) and Mary Emily Elizabeth Howard Viscountess Bolingbroke and St John were married at the Registry Office in Bath, Somerset [Map]. She by marriage Viscountess St John, Viscountess Bolingbroke. She had been his servant, subsequently housekeeper. The marriage was not revealed until after his death becoming something of a national scandal.
In November 1899 Henry St John 5th Viscount Bolingbroke 6th Viscount St John (age 79) died. His son Vernon (age 3) succeeded 7th Viscount St John, 6th Viscount Bolingbroke, 10th Baronet St John Lydiard Tregoze in Wiltshire although he was only recognised as such in 1926.
On 1st May 1974 Vernon Henry St John 6th Viscount Bolingbroke 7th Viscount St John (age 78) died. His second cousin twice removed Kenneth (age 47) succeeded 8th Viscount St John, 7th Viscount Bolingbroke, 11th Baronet St John Lydiard Tregoze in Wiltshire.
On 5th July 2010 Kenneth Oliver Musgrave St John 7th Viscount Bolingbroke 8th Viscount St John (age 83) died. His son Henry (age 53) succeeded 9th Viscount St John, 8th Viscount Bolingbroke, 12th Baronet St John Lydiard Tregoze in Wiltshire.
On 21st May 2011 Henry FitzRoy St John 9th Viscount St John 8th Viscount Bolingbroke (age 54) died. His brother Nicholas (age 36) succeeded 10th Viscount St John, 9th Viscount Bolingbroke, 13th Baronet St John Lydiard Tregoze in Wiltshire.
