All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In 1374 [his father] Louis Valois I Duke Orléans (age 1) and Catherine Hungary (age 4) were married. She the daughter of Louis I King Hungary King Poland (age 47) and Elizabeth Bosnia Queen Consort Hungary. He the son of [his grandfather] King Charles V of France (age 35) and [his grandmother] Joanna Bourbon Queen Consort France (age 35). They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry III of England.

In 1389 [his father] Louis Valois I Duke Orléans (age 16) and [his mother] Valentina Visconti Duchess of Orleans (age 18) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Gian Galeazzo Visconti 1st Duke Milan (age 37) and [his grandmother] Isabelle Valois. He the son of [his grandfather] King Charles V of France and [his grandmother] Joanna Bourbon Queen Consort France. They were first cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry III of England.

Chronicle of St Denis Book 14 Chapter 8. 22nd August 1393. While the king was thus troubled by the inconveniences of strangers, on the twenty-fourth day of the month of August, in the royal house of Saint Paul, the venerable queen bore him a daughter [Marie Valois], who was called Mary after being baptized; and she vowed to dedicate her to God and to commit her to His service perpetually, if He would free her from the darkness of ignorance and approve the vow she had made. Not long after, the [his mother] Duchess of Orléans (age 22), the wife of the [his father] Lord Duke of Orléans (age 21), the brother of the king, bore a son, whom it pleased to name Philip.

Dum sic rex peregrinis vexaretur incommodis, mensis augusti vicesima quarta die, in domo regia Sancti Pauli ei peperit fliam regina venerabilis, que baptizata Maria vocata fuit; et hanc Deo dicandam et ejus servicio perpetuo mancipandam vovit, si ipsum a tenebris ignorancie liberaret et votum quod emiserat approbaret. Nec multum post, domina Aurelianensis ducissa, uxor domini ducis Aurelianensis, fratris regis, filium peperit, quem Philippum placuit nominare.

Chronicle of St Denis Book 17 Chapter 8. [July 1396]. In the month of July, the venerable [his mother] Duchess of Orléans (age 25) gave birth to a son [Philip Valois Orléans Count Vertus] for her [his father] lord the duke (age 24), whom [his future brother-in-law] Duke Philip of Burgundy, the king's uncle, raised from the sacred font and named with his own name.

Mense jullio, Aurelianensis venerabilis ducissa domino duci viro suo peperit filium, quem dux Burgundie Philippus, regis patruus, de sacro fonte levavit, et eum suo nomine appellavit.

In July 1396 Philip Valois Orléans Count Vertus was born to Louis Valois I Duke Orléans (age 24) and Valentina Visconti Duchess of Orleans (age 25). Coefficient of inbreeding 7.38%.

Murder of Louis of Orléans

On 23rd November 1407 [his father] Louis Valois I Duke Orléans (age 35) was murdered on the orders of [his future father-in-law] John "Fearless" Valois Duke Burgundy (age 36) at Paris [Map]. His son [his brother] Charles (age 12) succeeded Duke Orléans.

On 4th December 1408 [his mother] Valentina Visconti Duchess of Orleans (age 37) died.

In 1410 Philip Valois Orléans Count Vertus (age 13) and Catherine Valois Countess Vertus (age 19) were married. She the daughter of John "Fearless" Valois Duke Burgundy (age 38) and Margaret Wittelsbach Duchess Burgundy (age 47). He the son of Louis Valois I Duke Orléans and Valentina Visconti Duchess of Orleans. They were second cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry III of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

In 1414 [his wife] Catherine Valois Countess Vertus (age 23) died at Ghent [Map].

Before 1st September 1420 [his illegitimate son] Philip "Bastard of Vertus" Valois Orléans was born illegitimately to Philip Valois Orléans Count Vertus (age 24).

On 1st September 1420 Philip Valois Orléans Count Vertus (age 24) died.
