Biography of Philippa Guines Duchess Ireland 1367-1411

Maternal Family Tree: Elizabeth Cuman

On 27th July 1365 [her father] Enguerrand de Coucy 1st Earl Bedford 1st Count Soissons (age 25) and [her mother] Isabella Countess Bedford and Soissons (age 33) were married at Windsor Castle [Map]. She the daughter of [her grandfather] King Edward III of England (age 52) and [her grandmother] Philippa of Hainault Queen Consort England (age 51). They were fourth cousin once removed.

Before 18th April 1367 Philippa Guines Duchess Ireland was born to Enguerrand de Coucy 1st Earl Bedford 1st Count Soissons (age 27) and Isabella Countess Bedford and Soissons (age 34) at Eltham Palace, Kent [Map]. She a granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 5th October 1376 Robert de Vere 1st Duke Ireland (age 14) and Philippa Guines Duchess Ireland (age 9) were married. She by marriage Countess of Oxford. She the daughter of Enguerrand de Coucy 1st Earl Bedford 1st Count Soissons (age 36) and Isabella Countess Bedford and Soissons (age 44). He the son of Thomas de Vere 8th Earl of Oxford and Maud Ufford Countess of Oxford (age 31). They were half third cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry III of England. She a granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

After 1380 [her father] Enguerrand de Coucy 1st Earl Bedford 1st Count Soissons (age 40) and [her step-mother] Isabelle of Lorraine were married. She the daughter of John Metz I Duke Lorraine (age 33) and Sophie Württemberg Duchess Lorraine. They were second cousin once removed.

On 5th October 1382 [her mother] Isabella Countess Bedford and Soissons (age 50) died.

In 1385 [her husband] Robert de Vere 1st Duke Ireland (age 22) was created 1st Marquis Dublin. Philippa Guines Duchess Ireland (age 17) by marriage Marchioness Dublin.

In 1386 [her husband] Robert de Vere 1st Duke Ireland (age 23) was created 1st Duke Ireland. Philippa Guines Duchess Ireland (age 18) by marriage Duchess Ireland.

In 1387 [her husband] Robert de Vere 1st Duke Ireland (age 24) and Agnes Launcekrona Duchess Ireland were married. She by marriage Duchess Ireland, Marchioness Dublin, Countess of Oxford. He the son of Thomas de Vere 8th Earl of Oxford and [her mother-in-law] Maud Ufford Countess of Oxford (age 42).

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In 1387 Robert de Vere 1st Duke Ireland (age 24) and Philippa Guines Duchess Ireland (age 19) were divorced.

On 22nd November 1392 [her former husband] Robert de Vere 1st Duke Ireland (age 30) was killed whilst hunting at Louvain [Map]. His uncle Aubrey (age 54) succeeded 10th Earl of Oxford.

Battle of Nicopolis

On 18th February 1397 [her father] Enguerrand de Coucy 1st Earl Bedford 1st Count Soissons (age 57) died whilst a prisoner following the Battle of Nicopolis without male issue. Earl Bedford extinct. His daughter [her sister] Marie (age 30) succeeded Countess Soissons.

In October 1411 Philippa Guines Duchess Ireland (age 44) died.
