Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

Biography of Cardinal Louis of Luxemburg -1443

Paternal Family Tree: Luxemburg

Louis of Luxembourg was born to [his father] John Luxemburg Count St Pol and [his mother] Margaret Brienne. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry III of England.

Around 1387 [his father] John Luxemburg Count St Pol [aged 17] and [his mother] Margaret Brienne [aged 22] were married. He the son of [his grandfather] Guy of Luxemburg I Count Saint Pol and Ligny and [his grandmother] Mathilde Chatillon Countess Saint Pol.

In 1397 [his father] John Luxemburg Count St Pol [aged 27] died.

On 8th May 1405 [his brother] Peter Luxemburg I Count Saint Pol [aged 15] and [his sister-in-law] Margherita Baux [aged 11] were married. She the daughter of Francesco Baux 1st Duke Andria [aged 75] and Sueva Orsini [aged 45]. They were sixth cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King John of England.

Before 26th October 1415 Louis of Luxembourg was consecrated Bishop of Thérouanne.

Battle of Agincourt

On 26th October 1415, the day after the Battle of Agincourt, the Bishop of Thérouanne consecrated part of the battle ground as a grave-site for the fallen.

On 23rd November 1418 [his brother] John Luxemburg II Count Ligny [aged 26] and [his sister-in-law] Jeanne de Béthune Viscountess Béthune [aged 21] were married.

In 1430 [his brother] Peter Luxemburg I Count Saint Pol [aged 40] was created I Count Saint Pol.

On 31st August 1433 [his brother] Peter Luxemburg I Count Saint Pol [aged 43] died of plague at Rambures, Somme. His son [his nephew] Louis [aged 15] succeeded I Count Saint Pol.

In 1435 Louis of Luxembourg fled to English held Rouen, France [Map] when the French recovered Paris. He was appointed Archbishop of Rouen. His niece Jacquetta of Luxemburg Duchess Bedford [aged 20] married the English regent John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford [aged 45].

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

In 1439 Louis of Luxembourg was appointed Cardinal by Pope Eugene IV [aged 56] at the request of the English.

On 5th January 1441 [his brother] John Luxemburg II Count Ligny [aged 49] died at Guise, Aisne.

On 18th September 1443 Cardinal Louis of Luxemburg died.
