In December 1263 [his father-in-law] Walter Clifford 3rd Baron Clifford died at Clifford Castle, Herefordshire [Map]. Baron Clifford Feudal either extinct or abeyant between his two daughters Lucia Clifford [aged 43] and [his wife] Maud Clifford [aged 29] and their issue. His brother Roger Clifford was the great x 2 grandfather of Roger Clifford who was created 1st Baron de Clifford in 1299.

On 14th May 1264 the army of Simon de Montfort 6th Earl of Leicester 1st Earl Chester [aged 56] including Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford [aged 20], Henry Hastings [aged 29] and Nicholas Segrave 1st Baron Segrave [aged 26] defeated the army of King Henry III of England [aged 56] during the Battle of Lewes at Lewes [Map].

King Henry III of England, his son, the future, King Edward I of England [aged 24], Humphrey Bohun 2nd Earl Hereford 1st Earl Essex [aged 60], Richard of Cornwall 1st Earl Cornwall [aged 55], John "Red" Comyn 1st Lord Baddenoch [aged 44], Philip Marmion 5th Baron Marmion [aged 30] and John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield [aged 32] were captured. John Warenne 6th Earl of Surrey [aged 33], John Balliol [aged 56], Robert Bruce 5th Lord Annandale [aged 49], Roger Leybourne [aged 49] and William de Valence 1st Earl Pembroke fought for the King. Guy Lusignan was killed. Fulk IV Fitzwarin [aged 44] drowned. Bishop Walter de Cantelupe [aged 73] was present and blessed the Montfort army before the battle.

Battle of Evesham

On 4th August 1265 the army loyal to King Henry III of England [aged 57], led by his son the future King Edward I of England [aged 26], supported by Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford [aged 21], Warin Basingburne and John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield [aged 33] defeated the rebel army of Simon de Montfort 6th Earl of Leicester 1st Earl Chester [aged 57] at the Battle of Evesham.

Roger Leybourne [aged 50] fought and reputedly saved the King's life.

Adam Mohaut rescued the King.

Alan de Plugenet of Kilpec fought for the King.

Simon de Montfort 6th Earl of Leicester 1st Earl Chester was killed. Earl of Leicester, Earl Chester forfeit. His son Henry Montfort [aged 26] was also killed.

Hugh Despencer [aged 41] was killed by Roger Mortimer 1st Baron Mortimer of Wigmore [aged 34]. Baron Despencer extinct. It may not have been created as a hereditary barony.

Simon Beauchamp [aged 31], Ralph Basset [aged 50], William Devereux [aged 46], Hugh Troyes, Richard Trussel, Peter Montfort [aged 60], William Mandeville, William Crepping, William Birmingham, Guy Balliol and Thomas Astley [aged 50] were killed. Henry Hastings [aged 30], Humphrey Bohun [aged 44], Nicholas Segrave 1st Baron Segrave [aged 27], John Vesci, John Fitzjohn and Guy Montfort Count Nola [aged 21] were captured.

We pray you, sweetest son, that you will command and pray the aforesaid Margaret de Weyland, that she will suffer that the mother may have the solace of her child for some time, after her desire. Dearest son, we commend you to God. Given at Amesbury [Map], the 4th day of March.

Battle of Orewin Bridge

On 11th December 1282 an English force including John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield [aged 50], Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn Mathrafal Prince Powys Wenwynwyn [aged 71] and Owen de la Pole Mathrafal 1st Lord Powis [aged 25] defeated a Welsh force at Builth Wells [Map] during the Battle of Orewin Bridge. The Welsh leader Llywelyn "Last" Aberffraw [aged 49] was killed effectively bringing to an end the independence of Wales. His brother Dafydd [aged 44] succeeded Prince of Wales.

On 9th May 1285 [his wife] Maud Clifford [aged 51] died at Brimpsfield, Gloucestershire.

On 24th June 1287 [his son] John Giffard 2nd Baron Giffard Brimpsfield was born to John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield [aged 55] and Margaret Belet [aged 32]. He married April 1322 Aveline Courtenay Baroness Giffard Brimpsfield, daughter of Hugh Courtenay 3rd Baron Okehampton and Eleanor Despencer Baroness Okehampton.

In 1295 John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield [aged 63] was created 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield.

On 29th May 1299 John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield [aged 67] died at his home in Boyton, Wiltshire [Map]. His son John [aged 11] succeeded 2nd Baron Giffard Brimpsfield. Aveline Courtenay Baroness Giffard Brimpsfield [aged 18] by marriage Baroness Giffard Brimpsfield.

Whereas at the prosecution of John Lestraunge and James Daudele, who is a minor in the king's wardship, suggesting that one [his uncle] John Mautravers lately gave by his charter the manor of Ashtton and the advowson of the church of St. Peter, Codeford, to Elias Giffard, lately deceased, in free marriage with [his mother] Alice his sister, as appeared by the charter then exhibited in chancery, and that John Giffard of Brymmesfeld, now deceased, held the manor and advowson on the day of his death, as kinsman and heir of [his father] Elias and Alice, according to the form of the grant, and that the said John Lestraunge and James Daudele are the next heirs of John Giffard for the manor and advowson according to the form of the gift, the king ordered the escheator to make inquisition concerning the premises; and it is found by the inquisition that John Mautravers gave the manor and advowson to Elias in free marriage with Alice his sister, to hold to them and the heirs of their bodies of the said John Mautravers and his heirs by the service of a knight's fee, and that John Giffard held the manor and advowson on the day of his death according lo the form of the gift, and that John Lestraunge and James Daudele are next heirs of John Giffard for the manor and advowson according to the form of the gift: the king orders the escheator to retain in his hands the moiety of the manor falling to James until further orders, and to deliver the other moiety of the manor to John Lestraunge.
