The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." Around 1532 Thomas "Black Tom" Butler 10th Earl Ormonde 3rd Earl Ossory was born to James Butler 9th Earl Ormonde 2nd Earl Ossory (age 31) and Joan Fitzgerald Countess Ormonde and Ossory (age 23).

Before 21st December 1532 [his father] James Butler 9th Earl Ormonde 2nd Earl Ossory (age 31) and [his mother] Joan Fitzgerald Countess Ormonde and Ossory (age 23) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] James Fitzgerald 10th Earl Desmond. He the son of [his grandfather] Piers "Red" Butler 8th Earl Ormonde 1st Earl Ossory (age 65) and [his grandmother] Margaret Fitzgerald Countess Ormonde and Ossory. They were fifth cousins.

On 28th October 1546 [his father] James Butler 9th Earl Ormonde 2nd Earl Ossory (age 45) died. His son Thomas (age 14) succeeded 10th Earl Ormonde, 3rd Earl Ossory.

In August 1548 [his step-father] Francis Bryan (age 58) and [his mother] Joan Fitzgerald Countess Ormonde and Ossory (age 39) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] James Fitzgerald 10th Earl Desmond.

In 1551 [his step-father] Gerald Fitzgerald 14th Earl Desmond (age 18) and [his mother] Joan Fitzgerald Countess Ormonde and Ossory (age 42) were married. No issue. A political marriage; the age difference being twenty-four years. She was the eldest daughter of [his grandfather] James Fitzgerald 10th Earl Desmond. The marriage brought a temporary truce to the Desmond and Ormonde factions. The difference in their ages was 24 years; she, unusually, being older than him. She the daughter of James Fitzgerald 10th Earl Desmond. He the son of James Fitzgerald 13th Earl Desmond and More O'Carroll. They were second cousins.

Chronicle of Queen Jane and Two Years of Queen Mary 1553. 19th December 1553. The xix. daie, the erle of Ormonde (age 21), sir (blank) Courteney knight, and mr. Barnaby, fell out in the night with a certayn priest in the streat, whose parte a gentyllman comyng by chance took, and so they fell by the eares; so that Barnabye was hurt. The morowe they were ledd by the ij. sheryves to the counter in the Pultry, where they remayned (blank) daies.

Wyatt's Rebellion

Henry Machyn's Diary. 27th January 1554. [The xxvij day of January the city sent into Kent a great number of men in white coats. The captains to command them, and the rest of their forces, were the duke of Norfolk (age 17), earl of Ormond (age 22), sir George Howard (age 29), [Possibly Hayward] and divers others. But many of the guards, and of the white-coats, deserted] them, and captaynes cam hom a-gayn. Wyatt (age 33) had gotten some of the late king's ordenanse; and so, after their removyng, cam towards Dartford [Map] with ys army towards London.

Note. P. 52. Sir George Howard was son of lord Edmund Howard, and one of the brothers of queen Katharine Howard. He was knighted by the duke of Somerset in Scotland in 1547; and in March 1550–1 had a warrant for office of Master of the Henchmen for one whole year. He was appointed to attend upon the young lords sent over the sea as hostages, whereof the earl of Hertford was one. Strype, Mem. ii. 539.

She by marriage Countess Ormonde, Countess Ossory. He the son of James Butler 9th Earl Ormonde 2nd Earl Ossory and Joan Fitzgerald Countess Ormonde and Ossory (age 50).

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. Henry Machyn's Diary. 11th July 1559. The xj day of July ther was mad a plasse [for the queen's] pensyoners to rune with-owt a tyltt with spayrers [spears]. [There were three] chalengers, my lord of Urmon (age 27), and ser John Paratt (age 30), and master [North], and ther wher (blank) deffenders boyth with spares [spears] and sw[ords.] Abowt v [5] of the cloke at after-non the Quen('s) (age 25) grace [came,] and the inbassadurs, and dyver lordes and lades stode [over the] gatt for to se; and after thay rane one chassy[ng the other], and after the Quen('s) grace cam down in-to the parke [and] toke her horse, and rod up to the bankett howse, [with] the inbassadurs and the lordes and lades, and so to soper [and] a maske, and after a grett bankett, and after grett castyng [of fire] and shutyng of gunes tyll xij [12] at nyght.

On 2nd January 1565 [his mother] Joan Fitzgerald Countess Ormonde and Ossory (age 56) died.

On 1st September 1582 [his wife] Elizabeth Berkeley Countess Ormonde and Ossory (age 47) died. She was buried in Westminster Abbey [Map].

On 9th November 1582 Thomas "Black Tom" Butler 10th Earl Ormonde 3rd Earl Ossory (age 50) and Elizabeth Sheffield Countess Ormonde and Ossory were married. She by marriage Countess Ormonde, Countess Ossory. He the son of James Butler 9th Earl Ormonde 2nd Earl Ossory and Joan Fitzgerald Countess Ormonde and Ossory.

Before 4th September 1583 [his son] James Butler was born to Thomas "Black Tom" Butler 10th Earl Ormonde 3rd Earl Ossory (age 51) and [his wife] Elizabeth Sheffield Countess Ormonde and Ossory.

In 1588 Thomas "Black Tom" Butler 10th Earl Ormonde 3rd Earl Ossory (age 56) was appointed 370th Knight of the Garter by Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland (age 54).

In 1589 [his son] James Butler (age 5) died.

Before 1601 [his son] Thomas Butler was born to Thomas "Black Tom" Butler 10th Earl Ormonde 3rd Earl Ossory (age 68) and [his wife] Elizabeth Sheffield Countess Ormonde and Ossory.

In 1601 [his son] Piers FitzThomas Butler died.

In 1601 Thomas "Black Tom" Butler 10th Earl Ormonde 3rd Earl Ossory (age 69) and Eleanor Barry Countess Ormonde and Ossory were married. She by marriage Countess Ormonde, Countess Ossory. He the son of James Butler 9th Earl Ormonde 2nd Earl Ossory and Joan Fitzgerald Countess Ormonde and Ossory. They were second cousin twice removed.

In 1606 [his son] Thomas Butler (age 5) died.

The King imposed this marriage on Black Tom, Elizabeth's father, who did not want the royal favourite for a son-in-law but could not oppose the King's will. She the daughter of Thomas "Black Tom" Butler 10th Earl Ormonde 3rd Earl Ossory (age 82) and [his wife] Elizabeth Sheffield Countess Ormonde and Ossory.

On 22nd November 1614 Thomas "Black Tom" Butler 10th Earl Ormonde 3rd Earl Ossory (age 82) died. His nephew Walter (age 55) succeeded 11th Earl Ormonde, 4th Earl Ossory. Helen Butler Countess Ormonde and Ossory by marriage Countess Ormonde, Countess Ossory.
