Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

Biography of James Douglas 14th Earl Morton 1702-1768

Paternal Family Tree: Douglas

In 1702 James Douglas 14th Earl Morton was born to [his father] George Douglas 13th Earl Morton (age 40) at Edinburgh.

On 22nd January 1730 [his uncle] Robert Douglas 12th Earl Morton (age 69) died. His brother [his father] George (age 68) succeeded 13th Earl Morton.

In 1731 [his son] Sholto Charles Douglas 15th Earl Morton was born to James Douglas 14th Earl Morton (age 29) and [his future wife] Agatha Halyburton.

In or before 1732 James Douglas 14th Earl Morton (age 29) and Agatha Halyburton were married. He the son of George Douglas 13th Earl Morton (age 69).

On 16th June 1733 [his daughter] Frances Douglas was born to James Douglas 14th Earl Morton (age 31) and [his wife] Agatha Halyburton at Aberdour. She died aged five in 1739.

On 20th March 1737 [his daughter] Mary Douglas was born to James Douglas 14th Earl Morton (age 35) and [his wife] Agatha Halyburton.

On 4th January 1738 [his father] George Douglas 13th Earl Morton (age 76) died. His son James (age 36) succeeded 14th Earl Morton.

On 19th September 1738 [his son] George Douglas was born to James Douglas 14th Earl Morton (age 36) and [his wife] Agatha Halyburton. He died aged five in 1744.

On 9th May 1739 [his daughter] Frances Douglas (age 5) died.

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Agatha Halyburton: she was born to James Halyburton of Pitcur in Forfarshire. In or before 1732 James Douglas 14th Earl Morton and she were married. He the son of George Douglas 13th Earl Morton.

On 8th March 1744 [his son] George Douglas (age 5) died.

On 31st July 1755 James Douglas 14th Earl Morton (age 53) and Bridget Heathcote Countess Morton were married. She by marriage Countess Morton. He the son of George Douglas 13th Earl Morton.

On 1st July 1756 [his son] John Douglas was born to James Douglas 14th Earl Morton (age 54) and [his wife] Bridget Heathcote Countess Morton. He married 4th October 1784 Frances Lascelles, daughter of Edward Lascelles 1st Earl Harewood and Anne Chaloner Baroness Harewood, and had issue.

On 3rd May 1758 [his daughter] Bridget Douglas was born to James Douglas 14th Earl Morton (age 56) and [his wife] Bridget Heathcote Countess Morton. She married 16th August 1777 William Henry Bouverie, son of William Pleydell-Bouverie 1st Earl Radnor and Rebecca Alleyne Viscountess Folkestone, and had issue.

On 12th October 1768 James Douglas 14th Earl Morton (age 66) died. His son Sholto (age 37) succeeded 15th Earl Morton.

On 2nd March 1805 [his former wife] Bridget Heathcote Countess Morton died.
