The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." Biography of James Young Simpson 1st Baronet 1811-1870

On 9th January 1792 [his father] David Simpson (age 31) and [his mother] Mary Jarvey (age 21) were married.

On 7th June 1811 James Young Simpson 1st Baronet was born to David Simpson (age 50) and Mary Jarvey (age 40) at Bathgate.

On 5th April 1820 [his mother] Mary Jarvey (age 49) died at Bathgate.

In 1825 James Young Simpson 1st Baronet (age 13) attended Edinburgh University. He began his medical studies in 1827 and achieved his MD in 1832.

On 17th January 1830 [his father] David Simpson (age 69) died at Bathgate.

In 1835 James Young Simpson 1st Baronet (age 23) was made senior president of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh.

On 1st September 1843 [his son] Walter Grindlay Simpson 2nd Baronet was born to James Young Simpson 1st Baronet (age 32). He was baptised on 14th October 1843.

In 1847 James Young Simpson 1st Baronet (age 35) discovered the use of Chloroform as a anaesthetic.

In 1849 James Young Simpson 1st Baronet (age 37) joined the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.

On 3rd February 1866 James Young Simpson 1st Baronet (age 54) was created 1st Baronet Simpson of Strathavon and the City of Edinburgh.

On 6th May 1870 James Young Simpson 1st Baronet (age 58) died at 52 Queen Street Edinburgh. His son [his son] Walter (age 26) succeeded 2nd Baronet Simpson of Strathavon and the City of Edinburgh.
