Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

After 6th November 1753 [her father] John Fleming 1st Baronet [aged 23] and [her step-mother] Jane Coleman Baroness Harewood [aged 22] were married.

On 23rd May 1755 Jane Fleming Countess Harrington was born to [her father] John Fleming 1st Baronet [aged 25].

On 5th November 1763 [her father] John Fleming 1st Baronet [aged 33] died. Baronet Fleming of Brompton Park in Middlesex extinct.

On 23rd May 1778 Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 25] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 23] were married at St Marylebone Church. He the son of William Stanhope 2nd Earl of Harrington [aged 58] and Caroline Fitzroy Countess Harrington [aged 56].

On 1st April 1779 [her father-in-law] William Stanhope 2nd Earl of Harrington [aged 59] died. His son [her husband] Charles [aged 26] succeeded 3rd Earl Harrington, 3rd Viscount Petersham, 3rd Baron Harrington. Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 23] by marriage Countess Harrington.

On 8th April 1780 [her son] Charles Stanhope 4th Earl of Harrington was born to [her husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 27] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 24]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married 1831 Maria Foote Countess Harrington and had issue.

On 26th November 1781 [her son] Lincoln Edwin Robert Stanhope was born to [her husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 28] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 26]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 2nd May 1782 Thomas Pelham-Clinton 3rd Duke Newcastle-under-Lyne [aged 29] and [her sister-in-law] Anna Maria Stanhope Countess Lincoln were married. She the daughter of [her father-in-law] William Stanhope 2nd Earl of Harrington and [her mother-in-law] Caroline Fitzroy Countess Harrington [aged 60]. He the son of Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton 2nd Duke Newcastle-under-Lyne [aged 62] and Catherine Pelham Countess of Lincoln. They were sixth cousins. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 2nd September 1784 [her son] Leicester FitzGerald Charles Stanhope 5th Earl of Harrington was born to [her husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 31] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 29]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married 23rd April 1831 Elizabeth Green Countess Harrington and had issue.

On 29th December 1785 [her son] William Sefton George Stanhope was born to [her husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 32] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 30]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. He died aged less than one years old.

In February 1786 [her son] William Sefton George Stanhope died unmarried.

On 24th April 1787 [her son] FitzRoy Henry Richard Stanhope was born to [her husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 34] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 31]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married 8th November 1808 Caroline Wyndham and had issue.

On 29th September 1788 [her son] Francis Charles Stanhope was born to [her husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 35] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 33]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 2nd August 1790 [her son] Henry William Stanhope was born to [her husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 37] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 35]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 20th November 1791 [her daughter] Caroline Anne Stanhope was born to [her husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 38] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 36]. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. She married 21st June 1841 Edward Ayshford Sanford.

On 15th February 1793 [her daughter] Charlotte Augusta Stanhope Duchess Leinster was born to [her husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 39] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 37]. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. She married 16th June 1816 her half fourth cousin Augustus Fitzgerald 3rd Duke Leinster, son of William Robert Fitzgerald 2nd Duke Leinster and Emilia St George Duchess Leinster, and had issue.

On 22nd February 1794 Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton 2nd Duke Newcastle-under-Lyne [aged 73] died. His son Thomas [aged 41] succeeded 3rd Duke Newcastle under Lyme, 10th Earl Lincoln. [her sister-in-law] Anna Maria Stanhope Countess Lincoln by marriage Countess Lincoln.

On 8th November 1808 FitzRoy Henry Richard Stanhope [aged 21] and Caroline Wyndham [aged 18] were married. He the son of Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 55] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 53].

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

She the daughter of Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 63] and Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 61]. He the son of William Robert Fitzgerald 2nd Duke Leinster and Emilia St George Duchess Leinster. They were half fourth cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 29th January 1819 [her sister-in-law] Isabella Stanhope Countess Sefton [aged 71] died.

On 3rd February 1824 Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [aged 68] died at St James's Palace [Map].

On 12th February 1824 Jane Fleming Countess Harrington [deceased] was buried at Westminster Abbey [Map].

On 5th September 1829 [her former husband] Charles Stanhope 3rd Earl of Harrington [aged 76] died. His son Charles [aged 49] succeeded 4th Earl Harrington, 4th Viscount Petersham, 4th Baron Harrington.
