The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 27th June 1674 Thomas Osborne 1st Duke Leeds (age 42) was created 1st Earl of Danby when he surrendered his Scottish Viscount Osborne to his third son Peregrine Osborne (age 15). He, Thomas, was on his mother's side a great-nephew of the previous Earl of Danby who was brother to Anne's mother Eleanor Danvers.
On 26th July 1712 Thomas Osborne 1st Duke Leeds (age 80) died. His son Peregrine (age 53) succeeded 2nd Duke Leeds, 2nd Earl of Danby, 2nd Viscount Osborne, 2nd Viscount Latimer, 2nd Baron Osborne of Kinderton, 3rd Baronet Osborne of Kiveton. On 25th June 1729 Peregrine Osborne 2nd Duke Leeds (age 70) died. His son Peregrine (age 37) succeeded 3rd Duke Leeds, 3rd Earl of Danby, 3rd Viscount Osborne, 3rd Viscount Latimer, 3rd Baron Osborne of Kinderton, 4th Baronet Osborne of Kiveton.
On 9th May 1731 Peregrine Osborne 3rd Duke Leeds (age 39) died. His son Thomas (age 17) succeeded 4th Duke Leeds, 4th Earl of Danby, 4th Viscount Osborne, 4th Viscount Latimer, 4th Baron Osborne of Kinderton, 5th Baronet Osborne of Kiveton.
On 23rd March 1789 Thomas Osborne 4th Duke Leeds (age 75) died at St James' Square. He was buried at the Osborne Family Chapel at All Hallows' Church Harthill [Map]. His son Francis (age 38) succeeded 5th Duke Leeds, 5th Earl of Danby, 5th Viscount Osborne, 5th Viscount Latimer, 5th Baron Osborne of Kinderton, 6th Baronet Osborne of Kiveton. On 31st January 1799 Francis Osborne 5th Duke Leeds (age 48) died. His son George (age 23) succeeded 6th Duke Leeds, 6th Earl of Danby, 6th Viscount Osborne, 6th Viscount Latimer, 6th Baron Osborne of Kinderton, 7th Baronet Osborne of Kiveton. His son Francis (age 40) succeeded 7th Duke Leeds, 7th Earl of Danby, 7th Viscount Osborne, 7th Viscount Latimer, 7th Baron Osborne of Kinderton, 8th Baronet Osborne of Kiveton, 14th Baron Darcy of Knayth, 11th Baron Conyers. On 4th May 1859 Francis Godolphin Osborne 7th Duke Leeds (age 60) died. He was buried at the Osborne Family Chapel All Hallows' Church Harthill [Map]. His first cousin George (age 56) succeeded 8th Duke Leeds, 8th Earl of Danby, 8th Viscount Osborne, 8th Viscount Latimer, 8th Baron Osborne of Kinderton, 9th Baronet Osborne of Kiveton. His nephew Sackville (age 31) succeeded 15th Baron Darcy of Knayth, 12th Baron Conyers.
On 8th August 1872 George Godolphin Osborne 8th Duke Leeds (age 70) died. His son George (age 43) succeeded 9th Duke Leeds, 9th Earl of Danby, 9th Viscount Osborne, 9th Viscount Latimer, 9th Baron Osborne of Kinderton, 10th Baronet Osborne of Kiveton, 3rd Baron Godolphin of Farnham Royal in Buckinghamshire. On 23rd December 1895 George Godolphin Osborne 9th Duke Leeds (age 67) died at Hornby Castle [Map]. His son George (age 33) succeeded 10th Duke Leeds, 10th Earl of Danby, 10th Viscount Osborne, 10th Viscount Latimer, 10th Baron Osborne of Kinderton, 11th Baronet Osborne of Kiveton, 4th Baron Godolphin of Farnham Royal in Buckinghamshire. Katherine Frances Lambton Duchess Leeds (age 33) by marriage Duchess Leeds.
