Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

Biography of Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne 1728-1800

In 1728 Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne was born to [his father] Wilmot Vaughan 3rd Viscount Lisburne.

On 15th January 1741 [his uncle] John Vaughan 2nd Viscount Lisburne [aged 46] died. His brother [his father] Wilmot succeeded 3rd Viscount Lisburne and 3rd Baron Fethard of Feathered in Tipperary.

Before 9th May 1755 Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 27] and Elizabeth Nightingale were married.

On 9th May 1755 [his son] Wilmot Vaughan 2nd Earl Lisburne was born to Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 27] and [his wife] Elizabeth Nightingale. His mother died ten days later.

On 19th May 1755 [his wife] Elizabeth Nightingale died from childbirth ten days after giving birth to her only child [his son] Wilmot Vaughan 2nd Earl Lisburne.

On 19th April 1763 Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 35] and Dorothy Shafto Countess Lisburne [aged 30] were married.

On 13th May 1764 [his daughter] Dorothy Elizabeth Vaughan was born to Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 36] and [his wife] Dorothy Shafto Countess Lisburne [aged 31]. She married 15th May 1792 Lawrence Palk 2nd Baronet, son of Robert Palk 1st Baronet and Anne van Sittart Lady Palk, and had issue.

In 1766 Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 38] was created 1st Earl Lisburne. [his wife] Dorothy Shafto Countess Lisburne [aged 33] by marriage Countess Lisburne.

On 19th January 1766 [his father] Wilmot Vaughan 3rd Viscount Lisburne died. His son Wilmot [aged 38] succeeded 3rd Viscount Lisburne and 3rd Baron Fethard of Feathered in Tipperary. [his wife] Dorothy Shafto Countess Lisburne [aged 33] by marriage Viscountess Lisburne.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

On 3rd May 1769 [his son] John Vaughan 3rd Earl Lisburne was born to Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 41] and [his wife] Dorothy Shafto Countess Lisburne [aged 36]. He married 2nd August 1798 his half fourth cousin once removed Lucy Courtenay Countess Lisburne, daughter of William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon and Frances Clack Countess Devon.

On 15th May 1792 [his son-in-law] Lawrence Palk 2nd Baronet [aged 26] and Dorothy Elizabeth Vaughan [aged 28] were married. She the daughter of Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 64] and Dorothy Shafto Countess Lisburne [aged 59].

On 2nd August 1798 John Vaughan 3rd Earl Lisburne [aged 29] and Lucy Courtenay Countess Lisburne [aged 28] were married. She the daughter of William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon and Frances Clack Countess Devon. He the son of Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 70] and Dorothy Shafto Countess Lisburne [aged 65]. They were half fourth cousin once removed.

On 6th January 1800 Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 72] died. His son Wilmot [aged 44] succeeded 2nd Earl Lisburne, 3rd Viscount Lisburne. The second Earl Lisburne was incurably insane, and his estates were placed in the hands of trustees.

On 12th September 1805 [his former wife] Dorothy Shafto Countess Lisburne [aged 72] died.
