Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

In 1503 Walter Herbert [aged 51] and [his mother] Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon [aged 20] were married. The difference in their ages was 31 years. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Henry Stafford 2nd Duke of Buckingham and [his grandmother] Catherine Woodville Duchess Buckingham and Bedford. He the son of William Herbert 1st Earl Pembroke and Anne Devereux.
Around December 1509 [his father] George Hastings 1st Earl Huntingdon [aged 22] and [his mother] Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon [aged 26] were married. She by marriage Baroness Hastings. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Henry Stafford 2nd Duke of Buckingham and [his grandmother] Catherine Woodville Duchess Buckingham and Bedford. They were third cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
In 1510 William Compton [aged 28] was involved in a public row with [his uncle] Edward Stafford 3rd Duke of Buckingham [aged 31] over his affair with the Duke's married sister [his mother] Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon [aged 27]. Some speculate that she, Anne, was having an affair with King Henry VIII's [aged 18] with Compton acting as go-between. Her husband George Hastings 1st Earl Huntingdon [aged 23] sent her to convent. William Compton took the sacrament to prove that he had not committed adultery. Some have speculated that her affair with Henry VIII continued after 1510 and that he, Henry, may be the father of her son Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon especially in view her being second in the list of gifts given in the 1513 New Years Day Gift Giving with a gift of a cup with a gilt cover weighing 30¾ oz (only second to the Archbishop of Canterbury).
In 1514 Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon was born to [his father] George Hastings 1st Earl Huntingdon [aged 27] and [his mother] Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon [aged 31] at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.
On 30th June 1528 William Compton [aged 46] died of sweating sickness. His son Peter Compton [aged 5] became a ward of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey [aged 55].. In his will he left [his mother] Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon [aged 45] a life interest in property in Leicestershire and founded a chantry where prayers would be said daily for her soul.
Around 1530 [his grandmother] Mary Hungerford Baroness Hastings, 4th Baroness Hungerford, 5th Baroness Botreaux and 2nd Baroness Moleyns [aged 64] died at Leicester, Leicestershire [Map]. Her son [his father] George [aged 43] succeeded 5th Baron Hungerford, 3rd Baron Moleyns, 6th Baron Botreaux.
On 25th June 1532 Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 18] and Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon [aged 21] were married. He the son of George Hastings 1st Earl Huntingdon [aged 45] and Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon [aged 49]. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
In 1533 [his daughter] Frances Hastings Baroness Compton was born to Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 19] and [his wife] Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon [aged 22]. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.23%. She married before 1574 her third cousin once removed Henry Compton 1st Baron Compton, son of Peter Compton and Anne Talbot Countess Pembroke, and had issue.
Around 1535 [his son] Henry Hastings 3rd Earl Huntingdon was born to Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 21] and [his wife] Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon [aged 24] at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.23%. He married his fourth cousin once removed Katherine Dudley Countess Huntingdon, daughter of John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland and Jane Guildford Duchess Northumberland.
In 1537 [his son] William Hastings was born to Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 23] and [his wife] Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon [aged 26]. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.23%.
Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

On 11th August 1542 [his daughter] Catherine Hastings Countess Lincoln was born to Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 28] and [his wife] Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon [aged 31]. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.23%. She married February 1557 her fourth cousin twice removed Henry Clinton 2nd Earl Lincoln, son of Edward Clinton 1st Earl Lincoln and Ursula Stourton Baroness Clinton, and had issue.
In 1544 [his mother] Anne Stafford Countess Huntingdon [aged 61] died.
In 1544 [his son] Walter Hastings was born to Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 30] and [his wife] Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon [aged 33] in Braunston, Leicestershire. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.23%. He married 22nd May 1574 Joyce Roper and had issue.
On 24th March 1545 [his father] George Hastings 1st Earl Huntingdon [aged 58] died. His son Francis [aged 31] succeeded 2nd Earl Huntingdon, 7th Baron Botreaux, 6th Baron Hungerford, 4th Baron Moleyns and 4th Baron Hastings. [his wife] Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon [aged 34] by marriage Countess Huntingdon.
Around 1546 [his daughter] Elizabeth Hastings Countess of Worcester was born to Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 32] and [his wife] Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon [aged 35]. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.23%. She married her third cousin once removed Edward Somerset 4th Earl of Worcester, son of William Somerset 3rd Earl of Worcester and Christina North Countess of Worcester, and had issue.
On 20th February 1547 King Edward VI of England and Ireland [aged 9] was crowned VI King of England at Westminster Abbey [Map] by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer [aged 57].
John Russell 1st Earl Bedford [aged 62] was appointed Lord High Steward. Henry Fitzalan 12th or 19th Earl of Arundel [aged 34] was appointed Constable of England.
Anthony Browne 1st Viscount Montagu [aged 18], George Vernon "King of the Peak" [aged 39], Richard Devereux [aged 34] and William Sharington [aged 52] were created Knight of the Bath.

Note. Muster in Hyde Park. This is described nearly in the same terms in the King's diary. Burnet has misprinted the date Dec. 4 instead of 7.
Note. The Scot of St. Peter's in Cornhill. This preacher has been before mentioned in p. 6 as "the Skott the curett" of St. Peter's. Whether he was the same as Richardson, whose popularity as a preacher is mentioned in p. 91, has not been ascertained.

On 25th July 1553 John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 49], John Dudley 2nd Earl Warwick [aged 26], Robert Dudley 1st Earl of Leicester [aged 21], Guildford Dudley [aged 18], Andrew Dudley [aged 46], Henry Dudley [aged 22] and Henry Manners 2nd Earl of Rutland [aged 26] and Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 39] were imprisoned at the Tower of London [Map] for supporting Jane Grey I Queen England and Ireland [aged 17].
In January 1554 Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 40] was released.
Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.
In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

On 19th January 1558 [his brother] Edward Hastings 1st Baron Hastings of Loughborough [aged 37] was created 1st Baron Hastings Loughborough.
On 20th June 1560 Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon [aged 46] died. He was buried at the Hasting's Chapel, St Helen's Church, Ashby-de-la-Zouch [Map]. His son Henry [aged 25] succeeded 3rd Earl Huntingdon, 8th Baron Botreaux, 7th Baron Hungerford, 5th Baron Moleyns and 5th Baron Hastings. Note. P. 239. Funeral of the earl of Huntingdon. Francis second earl of Huntingdon, K.G. succeeded his father in 1554. He died at Ashby de la Zouche, June 22, 1560 (MS. Harl. 897, f. 80); and a full memoir of him will be found in Nichols's History of Leicestershire, vol. iii. pp. 580–583, and at p. 619 a description of his monument in the church of Ashby de la Zouche [Map], of which a folio engraving is given, pl. lxxxiii. It bears recumbent effigies of the earl and of his [his former wife] countess [aged 49], who was a niece of cardinal Pole, and acted in 1569 as administratrix of the cardinal's will.
On 1st January 1562 the New Years Gift Giving was held. Those who gave gifts provide an interesting who's who of the Elizabethan Court soon after Elizabeth I's Coronation. Queen Elizabeth [aged 28] was present since a number are described as "With the Qene her Majestie."

Lady Margaret Strange married Henry Stanley Lord Strange [aged 30] on 07 Feb 1555. In 1561 he had not succeeded to Earldom of Derby and was known by the courtesy title Lord Strange. She is listed first since she was one of the few remaining direct descendants of Henry VII, being a great-granddaughter by his daughter Mary Tudor. Margaret Clifford was first in line to succeed in 1568 but died in 1596 before Elizabeth I.

On 23rd September 1576 [his former wife] Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon [aged 65] died. She was buried in the Hasting's Chapel, St Helen's Church, Ashby-de-la-Zouch [Map] with her husband Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon who had died sixteen years before. See Monument [Map].
On 11th August 1694 Theophilus Hastings 7th Earl Huntingdon [aged 43] wrote to Laurence Cromp of the Herald's Office "I have been this summer, att a considerable charge, to repair and Beautifie a monument to Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon, in Ashby Church".
1698. Hasting's Chapel, St Helen's Church, Ashby-de-la-Zouch [Map]. Part of the monument to Francis Hastings 2nd Earl Huntingdon and [his former wife] Catherine Pole Countess Huntingdon constructed at the request of Theophilus Hastings 7th Earl Huntingdon [aged 47] in 1698 to repair damage caused during the Civil War at which time the monument was moved to the side of the chapel. The inscription of the Urn reads "Theophilus, Earl of Huntingdon, as a last service, caused this chapel to be decorated, and this tomb to be restored, in glorious memory of his most illustrious forefathers whose remains are buried here. Done in faith, 1698"."
