The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

In 1240 Dafydd ap Llewellyn Prince of Wales [aged 27] was created Prince of Wales. Isabella "Lady of Snowdon" Braose Princess Wales [aged 18] by marriage Princess of Wales.

Battle of Orewin Bridge

On 11th December 1282 an English force including John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield [aged 50], Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn Mathrafal Prince Powys Wenwynwyn [aged 71] and Owen de la Pole Mathrafal 1st Lord Powis [aged 25] defeated a Welsh force at Builth Wells [Map] during the Battle of Orewin Bridge. The Welsh leader Llywelyn "Last" Aberffraw [aged 49] was killed effectively bringing to an end the independence of Wales. His brother Dafydd [aged 44] succeeded Prince of Wales.

Edward II Created Prince of Wales

On 7th February 1301 King Edward II of England [aged 16] was created Prince of Wales by his father King Edward I of England [aged 61]; the first English heir to receive the title. He was created 1st Earl Chester the same day.

On 12th May 1343 Edward "Black Prince" [aged 12] was created Prince of Wales.

Marriage of Edward "The Black Prince" and Joan "The Fair Maid of Kent"

On 10th October 1361 Edward "Black Prince" [aged 31] and Joan "Fair Maid of Kent" Princess Wales [aged 33] were married at Windsor Castle [Map]. She by marriage Princess of Wales. His first wife, her second (or third depending on how you count them) husband. She had four children already. They had known each other since childhood. Thirty-one and thirty-three respectively. A curious choice for the heir to the throne; foreign princesses were usual. They were married nearly fifteen years and had two children. She the daughter of Edmund of Woodstock 1st Earl Kent and Margaret Wake Countess Kent. He the son of King Edward III of England [aged 48] and Philippa of Hainaut Queen Consort England [aged 51]. They were half first cousin once removed. She a granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

In 1399 King Henry V of England [aged 12] was created Prince of Wales.

In 1454 Edward of Westminster Prince of Wales was created Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle [Map].

1460 Act of Accord

On 25th October 1460 Parliament enacted the Act of Accord by which Richard Plantagenet 3rd Duke of York [aged 49] was declared heir to King Henry VI of England and II of France [aged 38] disinheriting Edward of Westminster [aged 7]. At the same Parliament on 31st October 1460 Richard Plantagenet 3rd Duke of York was created Prince of Wales, 1st Duke of Cornwall. He was also appointed Lord Protector.

Edward V created Prince of Wales

On 26th June 1471 Edward, the future Edward V, was created Prince of Wales. Thomas Vaughan [aged 61] was knighted.

Edward of Middleham created Prince of Wales

On 8th September 1483 Edward York Prince of Wales [aged 9] was created Prince of Wales and 1st Earl Chester at York Minster [Map]. His parents Richard III [aged 30] and Anne Neville [aged 27] attended as did Edward Stafford 2nd Earl Wiltshire [aged 13].

Edward "Last Plantagenet" York 17th Earl Warwick [aged 8] and John York [aged 12] were knighted.

Arthur Tudor created Prince of Wales

On 27th February 1490 Prince Arthur Tudor [aged 3] was created Prince of Wales at Westminster Palace [Map].

Thomas West 8th Baron De La Warr 5th Baron West [aged 33] was appointed Knight of the Bath.

Henry Tudor created Prince of Wales

On 18th February 1504 Henry VIII [aged 12] was created Prince of Wales and 1st Earl Chester. John Mordaunt 1st Baron Mordaunt [aged 24] was created Knight of the Bath. Richard Empson [aged 54] was knighted.

Prince Henry invested as Prince of Wales and Earl Chester

On 1st June 1610 Prince Frederick [aged 16] was created Prince of Wales and 1st Earl Chester. Peregrine Bertie [aged 26] was appointed Knight of the Bath.

Investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales

On 4th November 1616 King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland [aged 15] was created Prince of Wales. Robert Radclyffe 5th Earl of Sussex [aged 43] carried the Purple Ermined Robe.

James Wriothesley [aged 11], brothers Robert Howard [aged 32] and William Howard, George Berkeley 8th Baron Berkeley [aged 15], Henry Carey 1st Viscount Falkland [aged 41] and John Cavendish were appointed Knight of the Bath.

On 29th July 1981 Prince Charles [aged 32] and Diana Spencer Princess Wales [aged 20] were married at St Paul's Cathedral [Map]. She by marriage Princess of Wales. She the daughter of John Spencer 8th Earl Spencer [aged 57] and Frances Ruth Roche Countess Spencer [aged 45]. He the son of Philip Mountbatten Duke Edinburgh [aged 60] and Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom [aged 55].
