Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

Joan Valois Queen Consort Navarre was crowned Queen Consort Navarre.

Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. 1102. And the Archbishop Anselm [aged 69] held a synod of clergy; and there they established many canons that belong to Christianity. And many, both French and English, were there deprived of their staves and dignity, which they either obtained with injustice, or enjoyed with dishonour. And in this same year, in the week of the feast of Pentecost, there came thieves, some from Auvergne133, some from France, and some from Flanders, and broke into the minster of Peterborough [Map], and therein seized much property in gold and in silver; namely, roods, and chalices, and candlesticks.

On 24th June 1343 Joan Valois Queen Consort Navarre was born to [her father] King John "The Good" II of France [aged 24] and [her mother] Bonne Luxemburg Queen Consort France [aged 28].

On 16th September 1343 Philip "Noble" III King Navarre [aged 37] died. His son [her future husband] Charles [aged 10] succeeded II King Navarre.

The Black Death

In June 1348 the The Black Death arrived in England. The first of many occurrences. It is estimated to have killed between 25 to 60 percent of the population of around six million. The outbreak lasted through 1349 recurring in 1362, 1369 and regularly thereafter until its last significant outbreak in The Great Plague of 1666.

On 11th September 1349 [her mother] Bonne Luxemburg Queen Consort France [aged 34] died of plague in Maubisson, Pontoise.

On 19th February 1350 [her father] King John "The Good" II of France [aged 30] and [her step-mother] Joan Auvergne Queen Consort France [aged 23] were married. On 22nd August 1350 [her grandfather] King Philip "Fortunate" VI of France [aged 56] died. His son [her father] John [aged 31] succeeded II King France: Capet Valois.

On 12th February 1352 Charles "Bad" II King Navarre [aged 19] and Joan Valois Queen Consort Navarre [aged 8] were married at Chateau du Vivie, Coutevroult. She by marriage Queen Consort Navarre. She the daughter of King John "The Good" II of France [aged 32] and Bonne Luxemburg Queen Consort France. He the son of Philip "Noble" III King Navarre and Joan Capet II Queen Navarre. They were second cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

Battle of Poitiers

On 19th September 1356 the army of Edward "Black Prince" [aged 26] defeated the French and Scottish army led by [her father] King John "The Good" II of France [aged 37] at the Battle of Poitiers

Hugh Courtenay 2nd or 10th Earl Devon [aged 53] protected the baggage train.

Gauthier VI Comte de Brienne [aged 54] was killed.

On 19th June 1369 [her brother] Philip "Bold" Valois II Duke Burgundy [aged 27] and [her sister-in-law] Margaret Dampierre Duchess Burgundy [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Duchess Burgundy. She the daughter of Louis of Male III Count Nevers II Count Flanders [aged 38] and Margaret of Brabant Countess Nevers and Flanders [aged 46]. On 3rd November 1373 Joan Valois Queen Consort Navarre [aged 30] died at Évreux.

On 1st January 1387 [her former husband] Charles "Bad" II King Navarre [aged 54] burned to death. His son Charles [aged 26] succeeded III King Navarre. Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort Navarre [aged 24] by marriage Queen Consort Navarre.
