Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Biography of Erminsende Namur Countess of Bar 1186-1247

In 1152 [her father] Henry "Blind" Namur IV Count Luxemburg I Count Namur (age 40) and Lauretta Metz Countess Namur and Luxemburg were married. She by marriage Countess Namur, Countess Luxemburg. She the daughter of Thierry Count Flanders (age 53) and Swanhilde Countess Flanders. He the son of [her grandfather] Godfrey Namur I Count Namur and [her grandmother] Ermesinde Luxemburg Countess Namur (age 72). They were second cousin once removed.

In 1176 [her future husband] Theobald of Bar I Count of Bar (age 16) and Laurette Loon Countess Bar were married. She by marriage Countess Bar. She the daughter of Louis I Count Loon (age 68) and Agnes Metz Countess Loon (age 62). He the son of Renauld of Bar II Count of Bar and [her future mother-in-law] Agnes Blois Countess of Bar.

In September 1186 Erminsende Namur Countess of Bar was born to [her father] Henry "Blind" Namur IV Count Luxemburg I Count Namur (age 74) and [her mother] Agnes Guelders Countess Namur and Luxemburg.

In 1189 [her future husband] Theobald of Bar I Count of Bar (age 29) and Erminsende of Bar Sur Seine Countess Bar were married. She by marriage Countess Bar. He the son of Renauld of Bar II Count of Bar and [her future mother-in-law] Agnes Blois Countess of Bar.

Before 1190 [her future husband] Waleran Luxemburg III Duke Limburg (age 24) and Cunigunda Metz Countess Luxemburg were married. She the daughter of Frederick Metz I Duke Lorraine (age 46) and Wierzchoslawa Ludmilla Greater Poland Duchess Lorraine. He the son of [her future father-in-law] Henry Luxemburg III Duke Limburg (age 49) and Sophia Saarbrücken Duchess Limburg.

In October 1190 Henry of Bar I Count of Bar (age 32) died at Acre [Map]. His brother [her future husband] Theobald (age 30) succeeded I Count Bar.

In 1195 Theobald of Bar I Count of Bar (age 35) and Erminsende Namur Countess of Bar (age 8) were married. She by marriage Countess Bar. The difference in their ages was 26 years. She the daughter of Henry "Blind" Namur IV Count Luxemburg I Count Namur (age 83) and Agnes Guelders Countess Namur and Luxemburg. He the son of Renauld of Bar II Count of Bar and Agnes Blois Countess of Bar. They were sixth cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King William "Conqueror" I of England.

In 1195 [her husband] Theobald of Bar I Count of Bar (age 35) and Erminsende of Bar Sur Seine Countess Bar were divorced.

On 14th August 1196 [her father] Henry "Blind" Namur IV Count Luxemburg I Count Namur (age 84) died. His daughter Erminsende (age 9) succeeded Countess Luxemburg.

In 1214 [her son] Henry of Bar died.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

He the son of Henry Luxemburg III Duke Limburg (age 74) and Sophia Saarbrücken Duchess Limburg.

In 1215 [her daughter] Catherine Luxemburg Duchess Lorraine was born to [her husband] Waleran Luxemburg III Duke Limburg (age 50) and Erminsende Namur Countess of Bar (age 28). She married 1225 her fourth cousin twice removed Matthias Metz II Duke Lorraine, son of Frederick Metz II Duke Lorraine and Agnes of Bar Duchess Lorraine, and had issue.

In 1216 [her son] Henry "Great" Luxemburg V Count Luxemburg III Count Namur was born to [her husband] Waleran Luxemburg III Duke Limburg (age 51) and Erminsende Namur Countess of Bar (age 29). He married 1240 his second cousin twice removed Margaret of Bar Countess Luxemburg and Namur, daughter of Henry of Bar II Count of Bar and Philippa Capet Countess of Bar, and had issue.

In 1221 [her husband] Waleran Luxemburg III Duke Limburg (age 56) succeeded III Duke Limburg. Erminsende Namur Countess of Bar (age 34) by marriage Duchess Limburg.

In 1225 [her son-in-law] Matthias Metz II Duke Lorraine (age 32) and [her daughter] Catherine Luxemburg Duchess Lorraine (age 10) were married. She by marriage Duchess Lorraine. The difference in their ages was 22 years. She the daughter of [her husband] Waleran Luxemburg III Duke Limburg (age 60) and Erminsende Namur Countess of Bar (age 38). He the son of Frederick Metz II Duke Lorraine and Agnes of Bar Duchess Lorraine. They were fourth cousin twice removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King William "Conqueror" I of England.

On 2nd July 1226 [her husband] Waleran Luxemburg III Duke Limburg (age 61) died. His son [her step-son] Henry (age 31) succeeded IV Duke Limburg, I Count Berg.

Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.
