Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

In 1258 [his father] Edmund Lacy 8th Baron Pontefract, 9th Baron Halton [aged 28] died. His son Henry [aged 7] succeeded 9th Baron Pontefract, 10th Baron Halton.
On 24th August 1261 Ela of Salisbury 3rd Countess of Salisbury [aged 74] died. She was buried in Lacock Abbey [Map]. Her inscription reads... Below lie buried the bones of the venerable Ela, who gave this sacred house as a home for the nuns. She also had lived here as holy abbess and Countess of Salisbury, full of good works. Her great granddaughter [his future wife] Margaret succeeded 4th Countess Salisbury.
In March 1266 [his grandmother] Margaret Quincy 3rd Countess Lincoln and Pembroke [aged 60] died. Her grandson Henry [aged 15] succeeded 4th Earl Lincoln.
Before 1271 Henry Lacy 4th Earl Lincoln, Earl Salisbury [aged 19] and Margaret Longespée 4th Countess of Salisbury and Lincoln were married. She by marriage Countess Lincoln. He by marriage Earl Salisbury. They were fifth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

On 22nd July 1298 King Edward I of England [aged 59] defeated the Scottish army led by William Wallace during the 22nd July 1298 Battle of Falkirk at Falkirk [Map] using archers to firstly attack the Scottish shiltrons with the heavy cavalry with infantry completing the defeat.

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough. That same year [1303] our king took seisin of all Gascony, and held it in his own name. He appointed the Earl of Lincoln [aged 52] to act there in his name, and the earl remained there for a full year, taking in the king's name the oaths of fealty and homages that were due from each. Then he returned to the king, whom he found at that time in Scotland.

On 31st January 1308 King Edward II of England [aged 23] and a group of England's leading nobles signed the Boulogne Agreement that attempted to curtail King Edward's rule. Memorandum, that this deed was delivered to the king in his chamber in the House of the Friars Preachers, Stamford [Map] at Stamford, by the hands of the said Peter and the king delivered the said deed to J his chancellor, to be enrolled in the chancery, and it was afterwards delivered to Ingelard de Warle, keeper of the King's Wardrobe to be kept in the king's wardrobe, but the king's charters that the said Peter hereof were not then restored.[CONTINUES].
Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough. In the same year [1311], Henry, Earl of Lincoln [aged 60], died. His sole daughter1, whom the Earl of Lancaster had taken as his wife, succeeded him; and thus there came to Lancaster the addition of two counties together with the honour of Pontefract. From that time he became the richest earl, possessing in full five counties2.

Article 20 describes at length the offences committed by Gaveston; he was once more condemned to exile and was to abjure the realm by 1 November.

Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

The seal, now much damaged, appended by two laces of silk, one red, the other green, forming a plaited cord of four strands; the impression is on hard white wax. Obverse.—The mounted figure of Henry de Lacy, the inscription lost, but from other impressions of his seal it appears to have been,—s' henrici de Laci Comitis Lincolnie Et Constabvlar' Cestr'. On the Reverse is an impression of the secretum, on bright red wax imbedded in the white,—sigillvm secreti.
